New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. | 1If I speak in the languages of humans and angels but have no love, I have become a reverberating gong or a clashing cymbal. |
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. | 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can understand all secrets and every form of knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains but have no love, I am nothing. |
If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. | 3Even if I give away everything that I have and sacrifice myself, but have no love, I gain nothing. |
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud | 4Love is always patient; love is always kind; love is never envious or arrogant with pride. Nor is she conceited, |
or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. | 5and she is never rude; she never thinks just of herself or ever gets annoyed. She never is resentful; |
It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. | 6is never glad with sin; she's always glad to side with truth, and pleased that truth will win. |
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. | 7She bears up under everything; believes the best in all; there is no limit to her hope, and never will she fall. |
Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! | 8Love never fails. Now if there are prophecies, they will be done away with. If there are languages, they will cease. If there is knowledge, it will be done away with. |
Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! | 9For what we know is incomplete and what we prophesy is incomplete. |
But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. | 10But when what is complete comes, then what is incomplete will be done away with. |
When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. | 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, thought like a child, and reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up my childish ways. |
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. | 12Now we see only an indistinct image in a mirror, but then we will be face to face. Now what I know is incomplete, but then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. |
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. | 13Right now three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. |
