New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. | 1If I speak human or angelic languages but do not have love, I am a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal. |
If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. | 2If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. |
If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing. | 3And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing. |
Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud | 4Love is patient, love is kind. Love does not envy, is not boastful, is not conceited, |
or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. | 5does not act improperly, is not selfish, is not provoked, and does not keep a record of wrongs. |
It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. | 6Love finds no joy in unrighteousness but rejoices in the truth. |
Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. | 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. |
Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever! | 8Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for languages, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. |
Now our knowledge is partial and incomplete, and even the gift of prophecy reveals only part of the whole picture! | 9For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. |
But when the time of perfection comes, these partial things will become useless. | 10But when the perfect comes, the partial will come to an end. |
When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. | 11When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put aside childish things. |
Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely. | 12For now we see indistinctly, as in a mirror, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, as I am fully known. |
Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. | 13Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. |
