New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Then the LORD said to Job, | 1The LORD continued his response to Job by saying: |
“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD | 2"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer." |
Then Job replied to the LORD, | 3Then Job replied to the LORD. He said: |
“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. | 4"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless. |
I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again | 5I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore." |
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him: |
“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. | 7"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers! |
“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? | 8Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous? |
Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?" |
All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. | 10"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity, |
Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. | 11dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person, |
Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. | 12stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are, |
Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. | 13buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place, |
Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. | 14then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!" |
“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. | 15"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox. |
See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. | 16Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen. |
Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. | 17His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength. |
Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. | 18His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron. |
It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. | 19He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword. |
The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. | 20Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic. |
It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. | 21He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes. |
The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. | 22The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him. |
It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. | 23What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows. |
No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. | 24Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?" |
