| 1Then the LORD said to Job, | 1And the LORD said to Job: |
| 2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD | 2“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.” |
| 3Then Job replied to the LORD, | 3Then Job answered the LORD: |
| 4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. | 4“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth. |
| 5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again | 5I have spoken once, but I have no answer—twice, but I have nothing to add.” |
| 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: |
| 7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. | 7“Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. |
| 8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? | 8Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself? |
| 9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like His? |
| 10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. | 10Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory. |
| 11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. | 11Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man and bring him low. |
| 12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. | 12Look on every proud man and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand. |
| 13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. | 13Bury them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave. |
| 14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. | 14Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can save you. |
| 15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. | 15Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He feeds on grass like an ox. |
| 16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. | 16See the strength of his loins and the power in the muscles of his belly. |
| 17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. | 17His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. |
| 18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. | 18His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron. |
| 19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. | 19He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. |
| 20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. | 20The hills yield him their produce, while all the beasts of the field play nearby. |
| 21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. | 21He lies under the lotus plants, hidden among the reeds of the marsh. |
| 22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. | 22The lotus plants conceal him in their shade; the willows of the brook surround him. |
| 23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. | 23Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains secure, though the Jordan surges to his mouth. |
| 24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. | 24Can anyone capture him as he looks on, or pierce his nose with a snare? |
