| 1Then the LORD said to Job, | 1The LORD answered Job: |
| 2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD | 2Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? Let him who argues with God give an answer. |
| 3Then Job replied to the LORD, | 3Then Job answered the LORD: |
| 4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. | 4I am so insignificant. How can I answer you? I place my hand over my mouth. |
| 5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again | 5I have spoken once, and I will not reply; twice, but now I can add nothing. |
| 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: |
| 7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. | 7Get ready to answer me like a man; When I question you, you will inform me. |
| 8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? | 8Would you really challenge my justice? Would you declare me guilty to justify yourself? |
| 9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? | 9Do you have an arm like God's? Can you thunder with a voice like his? |
| 10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. | 10Adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory. |
| 11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. | 11Pour out your raging anger; look on every proud person and humiliate him. |
| 12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. | 12Look on every proud person and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand. |
| 13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. | 13Hide them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave. |
| 14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. | 14Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can deliver you. |
| 15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. | 15Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like cattle. |
| 16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. | 16Look at the strength of his back and the power in the muscles of his belly. |
| 17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. | 17He stiffens his tail like a cedar tree; the tendons of his thighs are woven firmly together. |
| 18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. | 18His bones are bronze tubes; his limbs are like iron rods. |
| 19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. | 19He is the foremost of God's works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. |
| 20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. | 20The hills yield food for him, while all sorts of wild animals play there. |
| 21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. | 21He lies under the lotus plants, hiding in the protection of marshy reeds. |
| 22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. | 22Lotus plants cover him with their shade; the willows by the brook surround him. |
| 23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. | 23Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains confident, even if the Jordan surges up to his mouth. |
| 24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. | 24Can anyone capture him while he looks on, or pierce his nose with snares? |
