New Living Translation | International Standard Version |
Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: | 1The LORD responded to Job from the whirlwind and said: |
“Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words? | 2"Who is this who keeps darkening my counsel without knowing what he's talking about? |
Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. | 3Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers!" |
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much. | 4"Where were you when I laid the foundation of my earth? Tell me, since you're so informed! |
Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? | 5Who set its measurement? Am I to assume you know? Who stretched a boundary line over it? |
What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone | 6On what were its bases set? Who laid its corner stone |
as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? | 7while the morning stars sang together and all the divine beings shouted joyfully? |
“Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb, | 8"Who enclosed the sea with limits when it gushed out of the womb, |
and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness? | 9when I made clouds to be its clothes and thick darkness its swaddling blanket, |
For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. | 10when I proscribed a boundary for it, set in place bars and doors for it; |
I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!’ | 11and said, 'You may come only this far and no more. Your majestic waves will stop here.'? |
“Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? | 12"Have you ever commanded the morning at any time during your life? Do you know where the dawn lives, |
Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night’s wickedness? | 13where it seizes the edge of the earth and shakes the wicked out of it? |
As the light approaches, the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal; it is robed in brilliant colors. | 14Like clay is molded by a signet ring, the earth's hills and valleys then stand out like the colors of a garment. |
The light disturbs the wicked and stops the arm that is raised in violence. | 15Then from the wicked their light is withheld and their upraised arm is broken. |
“Have you explored the springs from which the seas come? Have you explored their depths? | 16"Have you been to the source of the sea and walked about in the recesses of the deepest ocean? |
Do you know where the gates of death are located? Have you seen the gates of utter gloom? | 17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness? |
Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! | 18Do you understand the breadth of the earth? Tell me, since you know it all! |
“Where does light come from, and where does darkness go? | 19"Where is the road to where the light lives? Or where does the darkness live? |
Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there? | 20Can you take it to its homeland, since you know the path to his house? |
But of course you know all this! For you were born before it was all created, and you are so very experienced! | 21You should know! After all, you had been born back then, so the number of your days is great! |
“Have you visited the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of hail? | 22"Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen where the hail is stored, |
(I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war.) | 23which I've reserved for the tribulation to come, for the day of battle and war? |
Where is the path to the source of light? Where is the home of the east wind? | 24Where is the lightning diffused or the east wind scattered around the earth? |
“Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning? | 25"Who cuts canals for storm floods, and paths for the lightning and thunder, |
Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives? | 26to bring rain upon a land without inhabitants, a desert in which no human beings live, |
Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground and make the tender grass spring up? | 27to satisfy a desolate and devastated desert, causing it to sprout vegetation? |
“Does the rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dew? | 28"Does the rain have a father? Who fathered the dew? |
Who is the mother of the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens? | 29Whose womb brings forth the ice? Who gives birth to frost out of an empty sky, |
For the water turns to ice as hard as rock, and the surface of the water freezes. | 30when water solidifies like stone and the surface of the deepest sea freezes? |
“Can you direct the movement of the stars— binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion? | 31"Can you bind the chains of Pleiades or loosen the cords of Orion? |
Can you direct the constellations through the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens? | 32Can you bring out constellations in their season? Can you guide the Bear with her cubs? |
Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth? | 33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you regulate their authority over the earth? |
“Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? | 34"Can you call out to the clouds, so that abundant water drenches you? |
Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct? | 35Can you command the lightning, so that it goes forth and calls to you, 'Look at us!' |
Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? | 36"Who sets wisdom within you, or imbues your mind with understanding? |
Who is wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven | 37Who has the wisdom to be able to count the clouds, or to empty the water jars of heaven, |
when the parched ground is dry and the soil has hardened into clods? | 38when dust dries into a mass and then breaks apart into clods? |
“Can you stalk prey for a lioness and satisfy the young lions’ appetites | 39"Can you hunt prey for the lioness to satisfy young lions |
as they lie in their dens or crouch in the thicket? | 40when they crouch in their dens and lie in ambush in their lairs? |
Who provides food for the ravens when their young cry out to God and wander about in hunger? | 41Who prepares food for the raven, when its offspring cry out to God as they wander for lack of food?" |
