New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. | 1A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. |
She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth. | 2She was pregnant and cried out in labor and agony as she was about to give birth. |
Then I witnessed in heaven another significant event. I saw a large red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven crowns on his heads. | 3Then another sign appeared in heaven: There was a great fiery red dragon having seven heads and 10 horns, and on his heads were seven diadems. |
His tail swept away one-third of the stars in the sky, and he threw them to the earth. He stood in front of the woman as she was about to give birth, ready to devour her baby as soon as it was born. | 4His tail swept away a third of the stars in heaven and hurled them to the earth. And the dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she did give birth he might devour her child. |
She gave birth to a son who was to rule all nations with an iron rod. And her child was snatched away from the dragon and was caught up to God and to his throne. | 5But she gave birth to a Son--a male who is going to shepherd all nations with an iron scepter--and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. |
And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place to care for her for 1,260 days. | 6The woman fled into the wilderness, where she had a place prepared by God, to be fed there for 1,260 days. |
Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. | 7Then war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon. The dragon and his angels also fought, |
And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. | 8but he could not prevail, and there was no place for them in heaven any longer. |
This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels. | 9So the great dragon was thrown out--the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him. |
Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, “It has come at last— salvation and power and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth— the one who accuses them before our God day and night. | 10Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say: The salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Messiah have now come, because the accuser of our brothers has been thrown out: the one who accuses them before our God day and night. |
And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony. And they did not love their lives so much that they were afraid to die. | 11They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they did not love their lives in the face of death. |
Therefore, rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea, for the devil has come down to you in great anger, knowing that he has little time.” | 12Therefore rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the earth and the sea, for the Devil has come down to you with great fury, because he knows he has a short time. |
When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. | 13When the dragon saw that he had been thrown to earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. |
But she was given two wings like those of a great eagle so she could fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness. There she would be cared for and protected from the dragon for a time, times, and half a time. | 14The woman was given two wings of a great eagle, so that she could fly from the serpent's presence to her place in the wilderness, where she was fed for a time, times, and half a time. |
Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth. | 15From his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river flowing after the woman, to sweep her away in a torrent. |
But the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out from the mouth of the dragon. | 16But the earth helped the woman. The earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river that the dragon had spewed from his mouth. |
And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus. [18] Then the dragon took his stand on the shore beside the sea. | 17So the dragon was furious with the woman and left to wage war against the rest of her offspring--those who keep God's commands and have the testimony about Jesus. [18] He stood on the sand of the sea. |
