| 1The LORD said to Moses, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: |
| 2“Give the people of Israel these instructions, which apply both to native Israelites and to the foreigners living in Israel. “If any of them offer their children as a sacrifice to Molech, they must be put to death. The people of the community must stone them to death. | 2"Say to the Israelites: Any Israelite or alien residing in Israel who gives any of his children to Molech must be put to death; the people of the country are to stone him. |
| 3I myself will turn against them and cut them off from the community, because they have defiled my sanctuary and brought shame on my holy name by offering their children to Molech. | 3I will turn against that man and cut him off from his people, because he gave his offspring to Molech, defiling my sanctuary and profaning my holy name. |
| 4And if the people of the community ignore those who offer their children to Molech and refuse to execute them, | 4But if the people of the country look the other way when that man gives any of his children to Molech, and do not put him to death, |
| 5I myself will turn against them and their families and will cut them off from the community. This will happen to all who commit spiritual prostitution by worshiping Molech. | 5then I will turn against that man and his family, and cut off from their people both him and all who follow him in prostituting themselves with Molech. |
| 6“I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution by putting their trust in mediums or in those who consult the spirits of the dead. I will cut them off from the community. | 6"Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists and prostitutes himself with them, I will turn against that person and cut him off from his people. |
| 7So set yourselves apart to be holy, for I am the LORD your God. | 7Consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. |
| 8Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD who makes you holy. | 8Keep my statutes and do them; I am the LORD who sets you apart. |
| 9“Anyone who dishonors father or mother must be put to death. Such a person is guilty of a capital offense. | 9"If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death. He has cursed his father or mother; his death is his own fault. |
| 10“If a man commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, both the man and the woman who have committed adultery must be put to death. | 10"If a man commits adultery with a married woman--if he commits adultery with his neighbor's wife--both the adulterer and the adulteress must be put to death. |
| 11“If a man violates his father by having sex with one of his father’s wives, both the man and the woman must be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense. | 11If a man sleeps with his father's wife, he has violated the intimacy that belongs to his father. Both of them must be put to death; their death is their own fault. |
| 12“If a man has sex with his daughter-in-law, both must be put to death. They have committed a perverse act and are guilty of a capital offense. | 12If a man sleeps with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death. They have acted perversely; their death is their own fault. |
| 13“If a man practices homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman, both men have committed a detestable act. They must both be put to death, for they are guilty of a capital offense. | 13If a man sleeps with a man as with a woman, they have both committed a detestable act. They must be put to death; their death is their own fault. |
| 14“If a man marries both a woman and her mother, he has committed a wicked act. The man and both women must be burned to death to wipe out such wickedness from among you. | 14If a man marries a woman and her mother, it is depraved. Both he and they must be burned, so that there will be no depravity among you. |
| 15“If a man has sex with an animal, he must be put to death, and the animal must be killed. | 15If a man has sexual intercourse with an animal, he must be put to death; you are also to kill the animal. |
| 16“If a woman presents herself to a male animal to have intercourse with it, she and the animal must both be put to death. You must kill both, for they are guilty of a capital offense. | 16If a woman approaches any animal and mates with it, you are to kill the woman and the animal. They must be put to death; their death is their own fault. |
| 17“If a man marries his sister, the daughter of either his father or his mother, and they have sexual relations, it is a shameful disgrace. They must be publicly cut off from the community. Since the man has violated his sister, he will be punished for his sin. | 17If a man marries his sister, whether his father's daughter or his mother's daughter, and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace. They are to be cut off publicly from their people. He has had sexual intercourse with his sister; he will bear his iniquity. |
| 18“If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her menstrual period, both of them must be cut off from the community, for together they have exposed the source of her blood flow. | 18If a man sleeps with a menstruating woman and has sexual intercourse with her, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has uncovered the source of her blood. Both of them are to be cut off from their people. |
| 19“Do not have sexual relations with your aunt, whether your mother’s sister or your father’s sister. This would dishonor a close relative. Both parties are guilty and will be punished for their sin. | 19You must not have sexual intercourse with your mother's sister or your father's sister, for it is exposing one's own blood relative; both people will bear their iniquity. |
| 20“If a man has sex with his uncle’s wife, he has violated his uncle. Both the man and woman will be punished for their sin, and they will die childless. | 20If a man sleeps with his aunt, he has violated the intimacy that belongs to his uncle; they will bear their guilt and die childless. |
| 21“If a man marries his brother’s wife, it is an act of impurity. He has violated his brother, and the guilty couple will remain childless. | 21If a man marries his brother's wife, it is impurity. He has violated the intimacy that belongs to his brother; they will be childless. |
| 22“You must keep all my decrees and regulations by putting them into practice; otherwise the land to which I am bringing you as your new home will vomit you out. | 22"You are to keep all my statutes and all my ordinances, and do them, so that the land where I am bringing you to live will not vomit you out. |
| 23Do not live according to the customs of the people I am driving out before you. It is because they do these shameful things that I detest them. | 23You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you, for they did all these things, and I abhorred them. |
| 24But I have promised you, ‘You will possess their land because I will give it to you as your possession—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from all other people. | 24And I promised you: You will inherit their land, since I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God who set you apart from the peoples. |
| 25“You must therefore make a distinction between ceremonially clean and unclean animals, and between clean and unclean birds. You must not defile yourselves by eating any unclean animal or bird or creature that scurries along the ground. I have identified them as being unclean for you. | 25Therefore you are to distinguish the clean animal from the unclean one, and the unclean bird from the clean one. Do not become contaminated by any land animal, bird, or whatever crawls on the ground; I have set these apart as unclean for you. |
| 26You must be holy because I, the LORD, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own. | 26You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be mine. |
| 27“Men and women among you who act as mediums or who consult the spirits of the dead must be put to death by stoning. They are guilty of a capital offense.” | 27"A man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist must be put to death. They are to be stoned; their death is their own fault." |
