| 9Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! | 9Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple. “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down from here. |
| 10For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you. | 10For it is written: ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You carefully; |
| 11And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” | 11and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ ” |
| 12Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’ ” | 12But Jesus answered, “It also says, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” |
| 13When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came. Jesus Rejected at Nazareth | 13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. |
| 14Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region. | 14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news about Him spread throughout the surrounding region. |

| 23Then he said, “You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself’—meaning, ‘Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’ | 23Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’ ” |
| 24 But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown. | 24Then He added, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown. |
| 25 “Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land. | 25But I tell you truthfully that there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and great famine swept over all the land. |
| 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner—a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon. | 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon. |
| 27 And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.” | 27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet. Yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” |
| 28When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious. | 28On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue were enraged. |
| 29Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff, | 29They got up, drove Him out of the town, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw Him over the cliff. |
| 30but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way. Jesus Casts Out a Demon | 30But Jesus passed through the crowd and went on His way. |

| 34“Go away! Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” | 34“Ha! What do You want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” |
| 35But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the demon threw the man to the floor as the crowd watched; then it came out of him without hurting him further. | 35But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said. “Come out of him!” At this, the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without harming him. |
| 36Amazed, the people exclaimed, “What authority and power this man’s words possess! Even evil spirits obey him, and they flee at his command!” | 36All the people were overcome with amazement and asked one another, “What is this message? With authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” |
| 37The news about Jesus spread through every village in the entire region. Jesus Heals Many People | 37And the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding region. |
| 38After leaving the synagogue that day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged. | 38After Jesus had left the synagogue, He went to the home of Simon, whose mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. So they appealed to Jesus on her behalf, |
| 39Standing at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and prepared a meal for them. | 39and He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once and began to serve them. |
| 40As the sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand healed every one. | 40At sunset, all who were ill with various diseases were brought to Jesus, and laying His hands on each one, He healed them. |
| 41Many were possessed by demons; and the demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak. Jesus Continues to Preach | 41Demons also came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But He rebuked the demons and would not allow them to speak, because they knew He was the Christ. |
| 42Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they begged him not to leave them. | 42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place, and the crowds were looking for Him. They came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving. |
| 43But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.” | 43But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because that is why I was sent.” |
| 44So he continued to travel around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea. | 44And He continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. |
