New King James Version | New International Version |
Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying: | 1Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the LORD has spoken against you--against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt: |
“You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.” | 2"You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins." |
Can two walk together, unless they are agreed? | 3Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so? |
Will a lion roar in the forest, when he has no prey? Will a young lion cry out of his den, if he has caught nothing? | 4Does a lion roar in the thicket when it has no prey? Does it growl in its den when it has caught nothing? |
Will a bird fall into a snare on the earth, where there is no trap for it? Will a snare spring up from the earth, if it has caught nothing at all? | 5Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground when no bait is there? Does a trap spring up from the ground if it has not caught anything? |
If a trumpet is blown in a city, will not the people be afraid? If there is calamity in a city, will not the LORD have done it? | 6When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it? |
Surely the Lord GOD does nothing, Unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets. | 7Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. |
A lion has roared! Who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken! Who can but prophesy? | 8The lion has roared-- who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken-- who can but prophesy? |
“Proclaim in the palaces at Ashdod, And in the palaces in the land of Egypt, and say: ‘Assemble on the mountains of Samaria; See great tumults in her midst, And the oppressed within her. | 9Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people." |
For they do not know to do right,’ Says the LORD, ‘Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’ ” | 10"They do not know how to do right," declares the LORD, "who store up in their fortresses what they have plundered and looted." |
Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “An adversary shall be all around the land; He shall sap your strength from you, And your palaces shall be plundered.” | 11Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "An enemy will overrun your land, pull down your strongholds and plunder your fortresses." |
Thus says the LORD: “As a shepherd takes from the mouth of a lion Two legs or a piece of an ear, So shall the children of Israel be taken out Who dwell in Samaria— In the corner of a bed and on the edge of a couch! | 12This is what the LORD says: "As a shepherd rescues from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites living in Samaria be rescued, with only the head of a bed and a piece of fabric from a couch." |
Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,” Says the Lord GOD, the God of hosts, | 13"Hear this and testify against the descendants of Jacob," declares the Lord, the LORD God Almighty. |
“That in the day I punish Israel for their transgressions, I will also visit destruction on the altars of Bethel; And the horns of the altar shall be cut off And fall to the ground. | 14"On the day I punish Israel for her sins, I will destroy the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. |
I will destroy the winter house along with the summer house; The houses of ivory shall perish, And the great houses shall have an end,” Says the LORD. | 15I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed and the mansions will be demolished," declares the LORD. |
