Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,1Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,
being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.2where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was famished.
And the devil said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.”3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
But Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’ ”4Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone.'"
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.5Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world.
And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish.6And he said to him, "To you I will grant this whole realm--and the glory that goes along with it, for it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.
Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”7So then, if you will worship me, all this will be yours."
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”8Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'"
Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.9Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,’10for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,'
and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”11and 'with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ ”12Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"
Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.13So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time.
Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.14Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the surrounding countryside.
And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.15He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by all.
So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.16Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,
And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;18"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”19to proclaim the year of the Lord' s favor."
Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him.20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”21Then he began to tell them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read."
So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”22All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.’ ”23Jesus said to them, "No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself!' and say, 'What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.'"
Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country.24And he added, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.
But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land;25But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land.
but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.
And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”27And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,28When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage.
and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff.29They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.
Then passing through the midst of them, He went His way.30But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.
Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths.31So he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.
And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority.32They were amazed at his teaching, because he spoke with authority.
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice,33Now in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,
saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”34"Ha! Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God."
But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.35But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!" Then, after the demon threw the man down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.
Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”36They were all amazed and began to say to one another, "What's happening here? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"
And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.37So the news about him spread into all areas of the region.
Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was sick with a high fever, and they made request of Him concerning her.38After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.
So He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.39So he stood over her, commanded the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them.
When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.40As the sun was setting, all those who had any relatives sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He placed his hands on every one of them and healed them.
And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” And He, rebuking them, did not allow them to speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.41Demons also came out of many, crying out, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.
Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them;42The next morning Jesus departed and went to a deserted place. Yet the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.
but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.”43But Jesus said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do."
And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.44So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.
