Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around,1The king settled into his palace, for the LORD gave him relief from all his enemies on all sides.
that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”2The king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent."
Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you.”3Nathan replied to the king, "You should go and do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you."
But it happened that night that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying,4That night the LORD told Nathan,
“Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?5"Go, tell my servant David: 'This is what the LORD says: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in?
For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle.6I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent.
Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’7Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?"'
Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel.8"So now, say this to my servant David: 'This is what the LORD of hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you leader of my people Israel.
And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth.9I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth.
Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously,10I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle them there; they will live there and not be disturbed any more. Violent men will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning
since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house.11and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief from all your enemies. The LORD declares to you that he himself will build a dynastic house for you.
“When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.12When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom.
He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.13He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.
I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.14I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.
But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.15But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”16Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.'"
According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.17Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him.
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord GOD? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far?18King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point?
And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord GOD; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?19And you didn't stop there, O LORD God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant's family. Is this your usual way of dealing with men, O LORD God?
Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord GOD, know Your servant.20What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition, O LORD God!
For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them.21For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant.
Therefore You are great, O Lord GOD. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.22Therefore you are great, O LORD God, for there is none like you! There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true!
And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods?23Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation on the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land, before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods.
For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, LORD, have become their God.24You made Israel your very own people for all time. You, O LORD, became their God.
“Now, O LORD God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You have said.25So now, O LORD God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality. Do as you promised,
So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You.26so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel!' The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you,
For You, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer to You.27for you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have told your servant, 'I will build you a dynastic house.' That is why your servant has had the courage to pray this prayer to you.
“And now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.28Now, O sovereign LORD, you are the true God! May your words prove to be true! You have made this good promise to your servant!
Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord GOD, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”29Now be willing to bless your servant's dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O sovereign LORD, have spoken. By your blessing may your servant's dynasty be blessed on into the future!"
