Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,1From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen
elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.2according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ's blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure!
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,4that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you,
who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.5who by God's power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials,6This brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer for a short time in various trials.
that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,7Such trials show the proven character of your faith, which is much more valuable than gold--gold that is tested by fire, even though it is passing away--and will bring praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,8You have not seen him, but you love him. You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy,
receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.9because you are attaining the goal of your faith--the salvation of your souls.
Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you,10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who predicted the grace that would come to you searched and investigated carefully.
searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.11They probed into what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified beforehand about the sufferings appointed for Christ and his subsequent glory.
To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into.12They were shown that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things now announced to you through those who proclaimed the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things angels long to catch a glimpse of.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;13Therefore, get your minds ready for action by being fully sober, and set your hope completely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.
as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance;14Like obedient children, do not comply with the evil urges you used to follow in your ignorance,
but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,15but, like the Holy One who called you, become holy yourselves in all of your conduct,
because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”16for it is written, "You shall be holy, because I am holy."
And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear;17And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one's work, live out the time of your temporary residence here in reverence.
knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers,18You know that from your empty way of life inherited from your ancestors you were ransomed--not by perishable things like silver or gold,
but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.19but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was manifested in these last times for your sake.
who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.21Through him you now trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,22You have purified your souls by obeying the truth in order to show sincere mutual love. So love one another earnestly from a pure heart.
having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,23You have been born anew, not from perishable but from imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.
because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away,24For all flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of the grass; the grass withers and the flower falls off,
But the word of the LORD endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.25but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was proclaimed to you.
