New King James Version | English Standard Version |
For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect. | 1For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. |
For then would they not have ceased to be offered? For the worshipers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins. | 2Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? |
But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. | 3But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. |
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins. | 4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. |
Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me. | 5Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; |
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You had no pleasure. | 6in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. |
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’ ” | 7Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’” |
Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the law), | 8When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), |
then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. | 9then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. |
By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. | 10And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. |
And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. | 11And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. |
But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, | 12But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, |
from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. | 13waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. |
For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. | 14For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. |
But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before, | 15And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, |
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” | 16“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” |
then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” | 17then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” |
Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin. | 18Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. |
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, | 19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, |
by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, | 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, |
and having a High Priest over the house of God, | 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, |
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. | 22let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. |
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. | 23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. |
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, | 24And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, |
not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. | 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. |
For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, | 26For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, |
but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. | 27but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. |
Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. | 28Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. |
Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? | 29How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? |
For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. And again, “The LORD will judge His people.” | 30For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” |
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. | 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. |
But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: | 32But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, |
partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; | 33sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. |
for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. | 34For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. |
Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. | 35Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. |
For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: | 36For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. |
“For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. | 37For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; |
Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.” | 38but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” |
But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul. | 39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. |
