To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. Do not keep silent, O God of my praise! | 1God of my praise, do not be silent. |
For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful Have opened against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. | 2For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. |
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without a cause. | 3They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause. |
In return for my love they are my accusers, But I give myself to prayer. | 4In return for my love they accuse me, but I continue to pray. |
Thus they have rewarded me evil for good, And hatred for my love. | 5They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love. |
Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand. | 6Set a wicked person over him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. |
When he is judged, let him be found guilty, And let his prayer become sin. | 7When he is judged, let him be found guilty, and let his prayer be counted as sin. |
Let his days be few, And let another take his office. | 8Let his days be few; let another take over his position. |
Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow. | 9Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. |
Let his children continually be vagabonds, and beg; Let them seek their bread also from their desolate places. | 10Let his children wander as beggars, searching for food far from their demolished homes. |
Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder his labor. | 11Let a creditor seize all he has; let strangers plunder what he has worked for. |
Let there be none to extend mercy to him, Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children. | 12Let no one show him kindness, and let no one be gracious to his fatherless children. |
Let his posterity be cut off, And in the generation following let their name be blotted out. | 13Let the line of his descendants be cut off; let their name be blotted out in the next generation. |
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. | 14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and do not let his mother's sin be blotted out. |
Let them be continually before the LORD, That He may cut off the memory of them from the earth; | 15Let their sins always remain before the LORD, and let him remove all memory of them from the earth. |
Because he did not remember to show mercy, But persecuted the poor and needy man, That he might even slay the broken in heart. | 16For he did not think to show kindness, but pursued the suffering, needy, and brokenhearted in order to put them to death. |
As he loved cursing, so let it come to him; As he did not delight in blessing, so let it be far from him. | 17He loved cursing--let it fall on him; he took no delight in blessing--let it be far from him. |
As he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, So let it enter his body like water, And like oil into his bones. | 18He wore cursing like his coat--let it enter his body like water and go into his bones like oil. |
Let it be to him like the garment which covers him, And for a belt with which he girds himself continually. | 19Let it be like a robe he wraps around himself, like a belt he always wears. |
Let this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers, And to those who speak evil against my person. | 20Let this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me. |
But You, O GOD the Lord, Deal with me for Your name’s sake; Because Your mercy is good, deliver me. | 21But you, LORD, my Lord, deal kindly with me for your name's sake; because your faithful love is good, rescue me. |
For I am poor and needy, And my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am suffering and needy; my heart is wounded within me. |
I am gone like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I fade away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. |
My knees are weak through fasting, And my flesh is feeble from lack of fatness. | 24My knees are weak from fasting, and my body is emaciated. |
I also have become a reproach to them; When they look at me, they shake their heads. | 25I have become an object of ridicule to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads in scorn. |
Help me, O LORD my God! Oh, save me according to Your mercy, | 26Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your faithful love |
That they may know that this is Your hand— That You, LORD, have done it! | 27so they may know that this is your hand and that you, LORD, have done it. |
Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, let them be ashamed, But let Your servant rejoice. | 28Though they curse, you will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice. |
Let my accusers be clothed with shame, And let them cover themselves with their own disgrace as with a mantle. | 29My accusers will be clothed with disgrace; they will wear their shame like a cloak. |
I will greatly praise the LORD with my mouth; Yes, I will praise Him among the multitude. | 30I will fervently thank the LORD with my mouth; I will praise him in the presence of many. |
For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, To save him from those who condemn him. | 31For he stands at the right hand of the needy to save him from those who would condemn him. |
