| 1Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt; each man and his household came with Jacob: | 1These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; each came with his family: |

| 10come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” | 10Come, let's deal shrewdly with them; otherwise they will multiply further, and when war breaks out, they will join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country." |
| 11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Raamses. | 11So the Egyptians assigned taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities for Pharaoh. |
| 12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. | 12But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread so that the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites. |
| 13So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor. | 13They worked the Israelites ruthlessly |
| 14And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage—in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor. | 14and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them. |
| 15Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; | 15The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives--the first whose name was Shiphrah and the second whose name was Puah-- |
| 16and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” | 16"When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver. If the child is a son, kill him, but if it's a daughter, she may live." |
| 17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive. | 17The midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them; they let the boys live. |
| 18So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?” | 18So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, "Why have you done this and let the boys live?" |
| 19And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.” | 19The midwives said to Pharaoh, "The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them." |
| 20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. | 20So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very numerous. |
| 21And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. | 21Since the midwives feared God, he gave them families. |
| 22So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.” | 22Pharaoh then commanded all his people: "You must throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile, but let every daughter live." |
