| 1Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. | 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware. |
| 2You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. | 2You know that when you were pagans, you were led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. |
| 3Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus be cursed," and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. | 3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed"; and no one can say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit. |
| 4There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. | 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. |
| 5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. | 5And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. |
| 6There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. | 6There are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. |
| 7Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. | 7But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. |
| 8To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, | 8For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; |
| 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, | 9to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, |
| 10to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. | 10and to another the effecting of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues. |
| 11All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. | 11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills. |
| 12Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. | 12For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ. |
| 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body--whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. | 13For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. |
| 14Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. | 14For the body is not one member, but many. |
| 15Now if the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. | 15If the foot says, "Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. |
| 16And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. | 16And if the ear says, "Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body," it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. |
| 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? | 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? |
| 18But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. | 18But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. |
| 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? | 19If they were all one member, where would the body be? |
| 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body. | 20But now there are many members, but one body. |
| 21The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!" | 21And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; or again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you." |
| 22On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, | 22On the contrary, it is much truer that the members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary; |
| 23and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, | 23and those members of the body which we deem less honorable, on these we bestow more abundant honor, and our less presentable members become much more presentable, |
| 24while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, | 24whereas our more presentable members have no need of it. But God has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, |
| 25so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. | 25so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. |
| 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. | 26And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. |
| 27Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. | 27Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. |
| 28And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. | 28And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues. |
| 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? | 29All are not apostles, are they? All are not prophets, are they? All are not teachers, are they? All are not workers of miracles, are they? |
| 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? | 30All do not have gifts of healings, do they? All do not speak with tongues, do they? All do not interpret, do they? |
| 31Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way. | 31But earnestly desire the greater gifts. And I show you a still more excellent way. |
