1Give thanks to the LORD! Call on his name! Make known his accomplishments among the nations! | 1Give thanks to the LORD and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done. |
2Sing to him! Make music to him! Tell about all his miraculous deeds! | 2Sing to him; yes, sing his praises. Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds. |
3Boast about his holy name! Let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! | 3Exult in his holy name; rejoice, you who worship the LORD. |
4Seek the LORD and the strength he gives! Seek his presence continually! | 4Search for the LORD and for his strength; continually seek him. |
5Recall the miraculous deeds he performed, his mighty acts and the judgments he decreed, | 5Remember the wonders he has performed, his miracles, and the rulings he has given, |
6O children of Abraham, God's servant, you descendants of Jacob, God's chosen ones! | 6you children of his servant Abraham, you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones. |
7He is the LORD our God; he carries out judgment throughout the earth. | 7He is the LORD our God. His justice is seen throughout the land. |
8He always remembers his covenantal decree, the promise he made to a thousand generations-- | 8He always stands by his covenant— the commitment he made to a thousand generations. |
9the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac! | 9This is the covenant he made with Abraham and the oath he swore to Isaac. |
10He gave it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as a lasting promise, | 10He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant: |
11saying, "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance." | 11“I will give you the land of Canaan as your special possession.” |
12When they were few in number, just a very few, and resident aliens within it, | 12He said this when they were few in number, a tiny group of strangers in Canaan. |
13they wandered from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another. | 13They wandered from nation to nation, from one kingdom to another. |
14He let no one oppress them; he disciplined kings for their sake, | 14Yet he did not let anyone oppress them. He warned kings on their behalf: |
15saying, "Don't touch my chosen ones! Don't harm my prophets!" | 15“Do not touch my chosen people, and do not hurt my prophets.” |
16He called down a famine upon the earth; he cut off all the food supply. | 16He called for a famine on the land of Canaan, cutting off its food supply. |
17He sent a man ahead of them--Joseph was sold as a servant. | 17Then he sent someone to Egypt ahead of them— Joseph, who was sold as a slave. |
18The shackles hurt his feet; his neck was placed in an iron collar, | 18They bruised his feet with fetters and placed his neck in an iron collar. |
19until the time when his prediction came true. The LORD's word proved him right. | 19Until the time came to fulfill his dreams, the LORD tested Joseph’s character. |
20The king authorized his release; the ruler of nations set him free. | 20Then Pharaoh sent for him and set him free; the ruler of the nation opened his prison door. |
21He put him in charge of his palace, and made him manager of all his property, | 21Joseph was put in charge of all the king’s household; he became ruler over all the king’s possessions. |
22giving him authority to imprison his officials and to teach his advisers. | 22He could instruct the king’s aides as he pleased and teach the king’s advisers. |
23Israel moved to Egypt; Jacob lived for a time in the land of Ham. | 23Then Israel arrived in Egypt; Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham. |
24The LORD made his people very fruitful, and made them more numerous than their enemies. | 24And the LORD multiplied the people of Israel until they became too mighty for their enemies. |
25He caused them to hate his people, and to mistreat his servants. | 25Then he turned the Egyptians against the Israelites, and they plotted against the LORD’s servants. |
26He sent his servant Moses, and Aaron, whom he had chosen. | 26But the LORD sent his servant Moses, along with Aaron, whom he had chosen. |
27They executed his miraculous signs among them, and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham. | 27They performed miraculous signs among the Egyptians, and wonders in the land of Ham. |
28He made it dark; they did not disobey his orders. | 28The LORD blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go. |
29He turned their water into blood, and killed their fish. | 29He turned their water into blood, poisoning all the fish. |
30Their land was overrun by frogs, which even got into the rooms of their kings. | 30Then frogs overran the land and even invaded the king’s bedrooms. |
31He ordered flies to come; gnats invaded their whole territory. | 31When the LORD spoke, flies descended on the Egyptians, and gnats swarmed across Egypt. |
32He sent hail along with the rain; there was lightning in their land. | 32He sent them hail instead of rain, and lightning flashed over the land. |
33He destroyed their vines and fig trees, and broke the trees throughout their territory. | 33He ruined their grapevines and fig trees and shattered all the trees. |
34He ordered locusts to come, innumerable grasshoppers. | 34He spoke, and hordes of locusts came— young locusts beyond number. |
35They ate all the vegetation in their land, and devoured the crops of their fields. | 35They ate up everything green in the land, destroying all the crops in their fields. |
36He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of their reproductive power. | 36Then he killed the oldest son in each Egyptian home, the pride and joy of each family. |
37He brought his people out enriched with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled. | 37The LORD brought his people out of Egypt, loaded with silver and gold; and not one among the tribes of Israel even stumbled. |
38Egypt was happy when they left, for they were afraid of them. | 38Egypt was glad when they were gone, for they feared them greatly. |
39He spread out a cloud for a cover, and provided a fire to light up the night. | 39The LORD spread a cloud above them as a covering and gave them a great fire to light the darkness. |
40They asked for food, and he sent quails; he satisfied them with food from the sky. | 40They asked for meat, and he sent them quail; he satisfied their hunger with manna—bread from heaven. |
41He opened up a rock and water flowed out; a river ran through dry regions. | 41He split open a rock, and water gushed out to form a river through the dry wasteland. |
42Yes, he remembered the sacred promise he made to Abraham his servant. | 42For he remembered his sacred promise to his servant Abraham. |
43When he led his people out, they rejoiced; his chosen ones shouted with joy. | 43So he brought his people out of Egypt with joy, his chosen ones with rejoicing. |
44He handed the territory of nations over to them, and they took possession of what other peoples had produced, | 44He gave his people the lands of pagan nations, and they harvested crops that others had planted. |
45so that they might keep his commands and obey his laws. Praise the LORD! | 45All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions. Praise the LORD! |
