| 1So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you also arm yourselves with the same attitude, because the one who has suffered in the flesh has finished with sin, | 1So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too. For if you have suffered physically for Christ, you have finished with sin. |
| 2in that he spends the rest of his time on earth concerned about the will of God and not human desires. | 2You won’t spend the rest of your lives chasing your own desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God. |
| 3For the time that has passed was sufficient for you to do what the non-Christians desire. You lived then in debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing, drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries. | 3You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols. |
| 4So they are astonished when you do not rush with them into the same flood of wickedness, and they vilify you. | 4Of course, your former friends are surprised when you no longer plunge into the flood of wild and destructive things they do. So they slander you. |
| 5They will face a reckoning before Jesus Christ who stands ready to judge the living and the dead. | 5But remember that they will have to face God, who stands ready to judge everyone, both the living and the dead. |
| 6Now it was for this very purpose that the gospel was preached to those who are now dead, so that though they were judged in the flesh by human standards they may live spiritually by God's standards. | 6That is why the Good News was preached to those who are now dead —so although they were destined to die like all people, they now live forever with God in the Spirit. |
| 7For the culmination of all things is near. So be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of prayer. | 7The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore, be earnest and disciplined in your prayers. |
| 8Above all keep your love for one another fervent, because love covers a multitude of sins. | 8Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. |
| 9Show hospitality to one another without complaining. | 9Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. |
| 10Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God. | 10God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. |
| 11Whoever speaks, let it be with God's words. Whoever serves, do so with the strength that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. | 11Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen. | 12Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. | 12Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. |
| 13But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad. | 13Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world. |
| 14If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you. | 14If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God rests upon you. |
| 15But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. | 15If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. |
| 16But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name. | 16But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name! |
| 17For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? | 17For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? |
| 18And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners? | 18And also, “If the righteous are barely saved, what will happen to godless sinners?” |
| 19So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good. | 19So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you. |
