For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, | 1For the choir director. A Psalm of David. Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent men |
who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. | 2Who devise evil things in their hearts; They continually stir up wars. |
Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) | 3They sharpen their tongues as a serpent; Poison of a viper is under their lips. Selah. |
O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. | 4Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; Preserve me from violent men Who have purposed to trip up my feet. |
Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) | 5The proud have hidden a trap for me, and cords; They have spread a net by the wayside; They have set snares for me. Selah. |
I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! | 6I said to the LORD, "You are my God; Give ear, O LORD, to the voice of my supplications. |
O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. | 7"O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle. |
O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah) | 8"Do not grant, O LORD, the desires of the wicked; Do not promote his evil device, that they not be exalted. Selah. |
As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! | 9"As for the head of those who surround me, May the mischief of their lips cover them. |
May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. | 10"May burning coals fall upon them; May they be cast into the fire, Into deep pits from which they cannot rise. |
A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. | 11"May a slanderer not be established in the earth; May evil hunt the violent man speedily." |
I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. | 12I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted And justice for the poor. |
Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. | 13Surely the righteous will give thanks to Your name; The upright will dwell in Your presence. |
