NET Bible | International Standard Version |
For the music director; a psalm of David. O LORD, rescue me from wicked men! Protect me from violent men, | 1 Deliver me, LORD, from evil people, preserve me from violent men, |
who plan ways to harm me. All day long they stir up conflict. | 2who craft evil plans in their minds, inciting wars every day. |
Their tongues wound like a serpent; a viper's venom is behind their lips. (Selah) | 3They sharpen their tongues like a serpent; the venom of vipers is on their lips. Interlude |
O LORD, shelter me from the power of the wicked! Protect me from violent men, who plan to knock me over. | 4Protect me, LORD, from the control of evil people, from violent men who have planned to trip me. |
Proud men hide a snare for me; evil men spread a net by the path; they set traps for me. (Selah) | 5The arrogant have laid a trap for me; they have spread a net with ropes, lining it with snares along the way. Interlude |
I say to the LORD, "You are my God." O LORD, pay attention to my plea for mercy! | 6So I say to the LORD, "You are my God; listen to my voice as I plead for mercy, LORD. |
O sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, you shield my head in the day of battle. | 7LORD, my Lord, my strong deliverer, you have protected my head in the time of battle. |
O LORD, do not let the wicked have their way! Do not allow their plan to succeed when they attack! (Selah) | 8Never grant, LORD, the desires of the wicked; never condone their plans so they cannot exalt themselves. Interlude |
As for the heads of those who surround me--may the harm done by their lips overwhelm them! | 9May those who surround me discover that the trouble they talk about falls on their own head! |
May he rain down fiery coals upon them! May he throw them into the fire! From bottomless pits they will not escape. | 10May burning coals fall on them; may they be cast into fire, and into miry pits, never to rise again. |
A slanderer will not endure on the earth; calamity will hunt down a violent man and strike him down. | 11Let not the slanderer become established in the land. May evil quickly hunt down the violent man. |
I know that the LORD defends the cause of the oppressed and vindicates the poor. | 12I know that the LORD will act on behalf of the tormented, providing justice for the needy. |
Certainly the godly will give thanks to your name; the morally upright will live in your presence. | 13Surely the righteous will give thanks to your name, while the upright live in your presence. |
