| 1"I am weary of my life; I will complain without restraint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. | 1"I loathe my own life; I will give full vent to my complaint; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. |
| 2I will say to God, 'Do not condemn me; tell me why you are contending with me.' | 2"I will say to God, 'Do not condemn me; Let me know why You contend with me. |
| 3Is it good for you to oppress, to despise the work of your hands, while you smile on the schemes of the wicked? | 3'Is it right for You indeed to oppress, To reject the labor of Your hands, And to look favorably on the schemes of the wicked? |
| 4"Do you have eyes of flesh, or do you see as a human being sees? | 4'Have You eyes of flesh? Or do You see as a man sees? |
| 5Are your days like the days of a mortal, or your years like the years of a mortal, | 5'Are Your days as the days of a mortal, Or Your years as man's years, |
| 6that you must search out my iniquity, and inquire about my sin, | 6That You should seek for my guilt And search after my sin? |
| 7although you know that I am not guilty, and that there is no one who can deliver out of your hand? | 7'According to Your knowledge I am indeed not guilty, Yet there is no deliverance from Your hand. |
| 8"Your hands have shaped me and made me, but now you destroy me completely. | 8'Your hands fashioned and made me altogether, And would You destroy me? |
| 9Remember that you have made me as with the clay; will you return me to dust? | 9'Remember now, that You have made me as clay; And would You turn me into dust again? |
| 10Did you not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese? | 10'Did You not pour me out like milk And curdle me like cheese; |
| 11You clothed me with skin and flesh and knit me together with bones and sinews. | 11Clothe me with skin and flesh, And knit me together with bones and sinews? |
| 12You gave me life and favor, and your intervention watched over my spirit. | 12'You have granted me life and lovingkindness; And Your care has preserved my spirit. |
| 13"But these things you have concealed in your heart; I know that this is with you: | 13'Yet these things You have concealed in Your heart; I know that this is within You: |
| 14If I sinned, then you would watch me and you would not acquit me of my iniquity. | 14If I sin, then You would take note of me, And would not acquit me of my guilt. |
| 15If I am guilty, woe to me, and if I am innocent, I cannot lift my head; I am full of shame, and satiated with my affliction. | 15If I am wicked, woe to me! And if I am righteous, I dare not lift up my head. I am sated with disgrace and conscious of my misery. |
| 16If I lift myself up, you hunt me as a fierce lion, and again you display your power against me. | 16Should my head be lifted up, You would hunt me like a lion; And again You would show Your power against me. |
| 17You bring new witnesses against me, and increase your anger against me; relief troops come against me. | 17'You renew Your witnesses against me And increase Your anger toward me; Hardship after hardship is with me. |
| 18"Why then did you bring me out from the womb? I should have died and no eye would have seen me! | 18'Why then have You brought me out of the womb? Would that I had died and no eye had seen me! |
| 19I should have been as though I had never existed; I should have been carried right from the womb to the grave! | 19'I should have been as though I had not been, Carried from womb to tomb.' |
| 20Are not my days few? Cease, then, and leave me alone, that I may find a little comfort, | 20"Would He not let my few days alone? Withdraw from me that I may have a little cheer |
| 21before I depart, never to return, to the land of darkness and the deepest shadow, | 21Before I go-- and I shall not return-- To the land of darkness and deep shadow, |
| 22to the land of utter darkness, like the deepest darkness, and the deepest shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness." | 22The land of utter gloom as darkness itself, Of deep shadow without order, And which shines as the darkness." |
