In the year of King Uzziah's death, I saw the sovereign master seated on a high, elevated throne. The hem of his robe filled the temple. | 1In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple. |
Seraphs stood over him; each one had six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and they used the remaining two to fly. | 2Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. |
They called out to one another, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord who commands armies! His majestic splendor fills the entire earth!" | 3And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory." |
The sound of their voices shook the door frames, and the temple was filled with smoke. | 4And the foundations of the thresholds trembled at the voice of him who called out, while the temple was filling with smoke. |
I said, "Too bad for me! I am destroyed, for my lips are contaminated by sin, and I live among people whose lips are contaminated by sin. My eyes have seen the king, the LORD who commands armies." | 5Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts." |
But then one of the seraphs flew toward me. In his hand was a hot coal he had taken from the altar with tongs. | 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal in his hand, which he had taken from the altar with tongs. |
He touched my mouth with it and said, "Look, this coal has touched your lips. Your evil is removed; your sin is forgiven." | 7He touched my mouth with it and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away and your sin is forgiven." |
I heard the voice of the sovereign master say, "Whom will I send? Who will go on our behalf?" I answered, "Here I am, send me!" | 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I. Send me!" |
He said, "Go and tell these people: 'Listen continually, but don't understand! Look continually, but don't perceive!' | 9He said, "Go, and tell this people: 'Keep on listening, but do not perceive; Keep on looking, but do not understand.' |
Make the hearts of these people calloused; make their ears deaf and their eyes blind! Otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with their ears, their hearts might understand and they might repent and be healed." | 10"Render the hearts of this people insensitive, Their ears dull, And their eyes dim, Otherwise they might see with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their hearts, And return and be healed." |
I replied, "How long, sovereign master?" He said, "Until cities are in ruins and unpopulated, and houses are uninhabited, and the land is ruined and devastated, | 11Then I said, "Lord, how long?" And He answered, "Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant, Houses are without people And the land is utterly desolate, |
and the LORD has sent the people off to a distant place, and the very heart of the land is completely abandoned. | 12"The LORD has removed men far away, And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land. |
Even if only a tenth of the people remain in the land, it will again be destroyed, like one of the large sacred trees or an Asherah pole, when a sacred pillar on a high place is thrown down. That sacred pillar symbolizes the special chosen family." | 13"Yet there will be a tenth portion in it, And it will again be subject to burning, Like a terebinth or an oak Whose stump remains when it is felled. The holy seed is its stump." |
