This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime. | 1Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime. |
So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn. | 2"So I will send fire upon Moab And it will consume the citadels of Kerioth; And Moab will die amid tumult, With war cries and the sound of a trumpet. |
I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken! | 3"I will also cut off the judge from her midst And slay all her princes with him," says the LORD. |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray. | 4Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because they rejected the law of the LORD And have not kept His statutes; Their lies also have led them astray, Those after which their fathers walked. |
So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses." | 5"So I will send fire upon Judah And it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem." |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals. | 6Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for money And the needy for a pair of sandals. |
They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity. | 7"These who pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the helpless Also turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father resort to the same girl In order to profane My holy name. |
They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God! | 8"On garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every altar, And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined. |
For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground. | 9"Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Though his height was like the height of cedars And he was strong as the oaks; I even destroyed his fruit above and his root below. |
I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own. | 10"It was I who brought you up from the land of Egypt, And I led you in the wilderness forty years That you might take possession of the land of the Amorite. |
I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking! | 11"Then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets And some of your young men to be Nazirites. Is this not so, O sons of Israel?" declares the LORD. |
"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!' | 12"But you made the Nazirites drink wine, And you commanded the prophets saying, 'You shall not prophesy!' |
Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down. | 13"Behold, I am weighted down beneath you As a wagon is weighted down when filled with sheaves. |
Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives. | 14"Flight will perish from the swift, And the stalwart will not strengthen his power, Nor the mighty man save his life. |
Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses. | 15"He who grasps the bow will not stand his ground, The swift of foot will not escape, Nor will he who rides the horse save his life. |
Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking! | 16"Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked in that day," declares the LORD. |
