This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime. | 1This is what the LORD says: “The people of Moab have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They desecrated the bones of Edom’s king, burning them to ashes. |
So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn. | 2So I will send down fire on the land of Moab, and all the fortresses in Kerioth will be destroyed. The people will fall in the noise of battle, as the warriors shout and the ram’s horn sounds. |
I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken! | 3And I will destroy their king and slaughter all their princes,” says the LORD. God’s Judgment on Judah and Israel |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray. | 4This is what the LORD says: “The people of Judah have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They have rejected the instruction of the LORD, refusing to obey his decrees. They have been led astray by the same lies that deceived their ancestors. |
So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses." | 5So I will send down fire on Judah, and all the fortresses of Jerusalem will be destroyed.” |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals. | 6This is what the LORD says: “The people of Israel have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! They sell honorable people for silver and poor people for a pair of sandals. |
They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity. | 7They trample helpless people in the dust and shove the oppressed out of the way. Both father and son sleep with the same woman, corrupting my holy name. |
They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God! | 8At their religious festivals, they lounge in clothing their debtors put up as security. In the house of their gods, they drink wine bought with unjust fines. |
For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground. | 9“But as my people watched, I destroyed the Amorites, though they were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks. I destroyed the fruit on their branches and dug out their roots. |
I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own. | 10It was I who rescued you from Egypt and led you through the desert for forty years, so you could possess the land of the Amorites. |
I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking! | 11I chose some of your sons to be prophets and others to be Nazirites. Can you deny this, my people of Israel?” asks the LORD. |
"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!' | 12“But you caused the Nazirites to sin by making them drink wine, and you commanded the prophets, ‘Shut up!’ |
Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down. | 13“So I will make you groan like a wagon loaded down with sheaves of grain. |
Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives. | 14Your fastest runners will not get away. The strongest among you will become weak. Even mighty warriors will be unable to save themselves. |
Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses. | 15The archers will not stand their ground. The swiftest runners won’t be fast enough to escape. Even those riding horses won’t be able to save themselves. |
Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking! | 16On that day the most courageous of your fighting men will drop their weapons and run for their lives,” says the LORD. |
