This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime. | 1Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime: |
So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn. | 2But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet: |
I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken! | 3And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD. |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray. | 4Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked: |
So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses." | 5But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem. |
This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals. | 6Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes; |
They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity. | 7That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name: |
They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God! | 8And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god. |
For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground. | 9Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. |
I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own. | 10Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite. |
I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking! | 11And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD. |
"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!' | 12But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not. |
Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down. | 13Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves. |
Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives. | 14Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself: |
Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses. | 15Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself. |
Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking! | 16And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD. |
