From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to further the promise of life in Christ Jesus, | 1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus, |
to Timothy, my dear child. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord! | 2To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. |
I am thankful to God, whom I have served with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I remember you in my prayers as I do constantly night and day. | 3I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, |
As I remember your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. | 4longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. |
I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you. | 5For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. |
Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. | 6For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. |
For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. | 7For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. |
So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me, a prisoner for his sake, but by God's power accept your share of suffering for the gospel. | 8Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, |
He is the one who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not based on our works but on his own purpose and grace, granted to us in Christ Jesus before time began, | 9who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, |
but now made visible through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus. He has broken the power of death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel! | 10but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, |
For this gospel I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher. | 11for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. |
Because of this, in fact, I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one in whom my faith is set and I am convinced that he is able to protect what has been entrusted to me until that day. | 12For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. |
Hold to the standard of sound words that you heard from me and do so with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. | 13Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. |
Protect that good thing entrusted to you, through the Holy Spirit who lives within us. | 14Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you. |
You know that everyone in the province of Asia deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes. | 15You are aware of the fact that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes. |
May the Lord grant mercy to the family of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my imprisonment. | 16The Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains; |
But when he arrived in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me. | 17but when he was in Rome, he eagerly searched for me and found me-- |
May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well all the ways he served me in Ephesus. | 18the Lord grant to him to find mercy from the Lord on that day-- and you know very well what services he rendered at Ephesus. |
