NET Bible | King James Bible |
You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors. | 1All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers. |
Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not. | 2And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no. |
So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth. | 3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live. |
Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years. | 4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years. |
Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you. | 5Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee. |
So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him. | 6Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. |
For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills, | 7For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; |
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey, | 8A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; |
a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper. | 9A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. |
You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you. | 10When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. |
Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today. | 11Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: |
When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses, | 12Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; |
when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything, | 13And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; |
be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery, | 14Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage; |
and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and | 15Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; |
fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you. | 16Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; |
Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth." | 17And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. |
You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day. | 18But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. |
Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated. | 19And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish. |
Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. | 20As the nations which the LORD destroyeth before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the voice of the LORD your God. |
