You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the LORD promised to your ancestors.1You must carefully follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase, and may enter and take possession of the land the LORD swore to your fathers.
Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these forty years through the desert so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not.2Remember that the LORD your God led you on the entire journey these 40 years in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commands.
So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the LORD's mouth.3He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then He gave you manna to eat, which you and your fathers had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these forty years.4Your clothing did not wear out, and your feet did not swell these 40 years.
Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child, the LORD your God disciplines you.5Keep in mind that the LORD your God has been disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.
So you must keep his commandments, live according to his standards, and revere him.6So keep the commands of the LORD your God by walking in His ways and fearing Him.
For the LORD your God is bringing you to a good land, a land of brooks, springs, and fountains flowing forth in valleys and hills,7For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with streams of water, springs, and deep water sources, flowing in both valleys and hills;
a land of wheat, barley, vines, fig trees, and pomegranates, of olive trees and honey,8a land of wheat, barley, vines, figs, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey;
a land where you may eat food in plenty and find no lack of anything, a land whose stones are iron and from whose hills you can mine copper.9a land where you will eat food without shortage, where you will lack nothing; a land whose rocks are iron and from whose hills you will mine copper.
You will eat your fill and then praise the LORD your God because of the good land he has given you. 10When you eat and are full, you will praise the LORD your God for the good land He has given you."
Be sure you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments, ordinances, and statutes that I am giving you today.11Be careful that you don't forget the LORD your God by failing to keep His command--the ordinances and statutes--I am giving you today.
When you eat your fill, when you build and occupy good houses,12When you eat and are full, and build beautiful houses to live in,
when your cattle and flocks increase, when you have plenty of silver and gold, and when you have abundance of everything,13and your herds and flocks grow large, and your silver and gold multiply, and everything else you have increases,
be sure you do not feel self-important and forget the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt, the place of slavery,14be careful that your heart doesn't become proud and you forget the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
and who brought you through the great, fearful desert of venomous serpents and scorpions, an arid place with no water. He made water flow from a flint rock and15He led you through the great and terrible wilderness with its poisonous snakes and scorpions, a thirsty land where there was no water. He brought water out of the flint-like rock for you.
fed you in the desert with manna (which your ancestors had never before known) so that he might by humbling you test you and eventually bring good to you.16He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.
Be careful not to say, "My own ability and skill have gotten me this wealth."17You may say to yourself, 'My power and my own ability have gained this wealth for me,'
You must remember the LORD your God, for he is the one who gives ability to get wealth; if you do this he will confirm his covenant that he made by oath to your ancestors, even as he has to this day.18but remember that the LORD your God gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant He swore to your fathers, as it is today.
Now if you forget the LORD your God at all and follow other gods, worshiping and prostrating yourselves before them, I testify to you today that you will surely be annihilated.19If you ever forget the LORD your God and go after other gods to worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will perish.
Just like the nations the LORD is about to destroy from your sight, so he will do to you because you would not obey him. 20Like the nations the LORD is about to destroy before you, you will perish if you do not obey the LORD your God."
