The king settled into his palace, for the LORD gave him relief from all his enemies on all sides.1And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
The king said to Nathan the prophet, "Look! I am living in a palace made from cedar, while the ark of God sits in the middle of a tent."2That the king said unto Nathan the prophet, See now, I dwell in an house of cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.
Nathan replied to the king, "You should go and do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you."3And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in thine heart; for the LORD is with thee.
That night the LORD told Nathan,4And it came to pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto Nathan, saying,
"Go, tell my servant David: 'This is what the LORD says: Do you really intend to build a house for me to live in?5Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
I have not lived in a house from the time I brought the Israelites up from Egypt to the present day. Instead, I was traveling with them and living in a tent.6Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say to any of the leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?"' 7In all the places wherein I have walked with all the children of Israel spake I a word with any of the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, Why build ye not me an house of cedar?
"So now, say this to my servant David: 'This is what the LORD of hosts says: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you leader of my people Israel.8Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
I was with you wherever you went, and I defeated all your enemies before you. Now I will make you as famous as the great men of the earth.9And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I will establish a place for my people Israel and settle them there; they will live there and not be disturbed any more. Violent men will not oppress them again, as they did in the beginning10Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime,
and during the time when I appointed judges to lead my people Israel. Instead, I will give you relief from all your enemies. The LORD declares to you that he himself will build a dynastic house for you.11And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
When the time comes for you to die, I will raise up your descendant, one of your own sons, to succeed you, and I will establish his kingdom.12And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
He will build a house for my name, and I will make his dynasty permanent.13He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.14I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
But my loyal love will not be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you.15But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee.
Your house and your kingdom will stand before me permanently; your dynasty will be permanent.'"16And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.
Nathan told David all these words that were revealed to him. 17According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.
King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you should have brought me to this point?18Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
And you didn't stop there, O LORD God! You have also spoken about the future of your servant's family. Is this your usual way of dealing with men, O LORD God?19And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant's house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?
What more can David say to you? You have given your servant special recognition, O LORD God!20And what can David say more unto thee? for thou, Lord GOD, knowest thy servant.
For the sake of your promise and according to your purpose you have done this great thing in order to reveal it to your servant.21For thy word's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.
Therefore you are great, O LORD God, for there is none like you! There is no God besides you! What we have heard is true!22Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.
Who is like your people, Israel, a unique nation on the earth? Their God went to claim a nation for himself and to make a name for himself! You did great and awesome acts for your land, before your people whom you delivered for yourself from the Egyptian empire and its gods.23And what one nation in the earth is like thy people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem for a people to himself, and to make him a name, and to do for you great things and terrible, for thy land, before thy people, which thou redeemedst to thee from Egypt, from the nations and their gods?
You made Israel your very own people for all time. You, O LORD, became their God.24For thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people Israel to be a people unto thee for ever: and thou, LORD, art become their God.
So now, O LORD God, make this promise you have made about your servant and his family a permanent reality. Do as you promised,25And now, O LORD God, the word that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant, and concerning his house, establish it for ever, and do as thou hast said.
so you may gain lasting fame, as people say, 'The LORD of hosts is God over Israel!' The dynasty of your servant David will be established before you,26And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of thy servant David be established before thee.
for you, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have told your servant, 'I will build you a dynastic house.' That is why your servant has had the courage to pray this prayer to you.27For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
Now, O sovereign LORD, you are the true God! May your words prove to be true! You have made this good promise to your servant!28And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
Now be willing to bless your servant's dynasty so that it may stand permanently before you, for you, O sovereign LORD, have spoken. By your blessing may your servant's dynasty be blessed on into the future!" 29Therefore now let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee: for thou, O Lord GOD, hast spoken it: and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever.
