A musical composition by David, which he sang to the LORD concerning a Benjaminite named Cush. O LORD my God, in you I have taken shelter. Deliver me from all who chase me! Rescue me! | 1LORD my God, I seek refuge in you; save me from all my pursuers and rescue me |
Otherwise they will rip me to shreds like a lion; they will tear me to bits and no one will be able to rescue me. | 2or they will tear me like a lion, ripping me apart with no one to rescue me. |
O LORD my God, if I have done what they say, or am guilty of unjust actions, | 3LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is injustice on my hands, |
or have wronged my ally, or helped his lawless enemy, | 4if I have done harm to one at peace with me or have plundered my adversary without cause, |
may an enemy relentlessly chase me and catch me; may he trample me to death and leave me lying dishonored in the dust. (Selah) | 5may an enemy pursue and overtake me; may he trample me to the ground and leave my honor in the dust. Selah |
Stand up angrily, LORD! Rise up with raging fury against my enemies! Wake up for my sake and execute the judgment you have decreed for them! | 6Rise up, LORD, in your anger; lift yourself up against the fury of my adversaries; awake for me; you have ordained a judgment. |
The countries are assembled all around you; take once more your rightful place over them! | 7Let the assembly of peoples gather around you; take your seat on high over it. |
The LORD judges the nations. Vindicate me, LORD, because I am innocent, because I am blameless, O Exalted One! | 8The LORD judges the peoples; vindicate me, LORD, according to my righteousness and my integrity. |
May the evil deeds of the wicked come to an end! But make the innocent secure, O righteous God, you who examine inner thoughts and motives! | 9Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous. The one who examines the thoughts and emotions is a righteous God. |
The Exalted God is my shield, the one who delivers the morally upright. | 10My shield is with God, who saves the upright in heart. |
God is a just judge; he is angry throughout the day. | 11God is a righteous judge and a God who shows his wrath every day. |
If a person does not repent, God sharpens his sword and prepares to shoot his bow. | 12If anyone does not repent, he will sharpen his sword; he has strung his bow and made it ready. |
He prepares to use deadly weapons against him; he gets ready to shoot flaming arrows. | 13He has prepared his deadly weapons; he tips his arrows with fire. |
See the one who is pregnant with wickedness, who conceives destructive plans, and gives birth to harmful lies-- | 14See, the wicked one is pregnant with evil, conceives trouble, and gives birth to deceit. |
he digs a pit and then falls into the hole he has made. | 15He dug a pit and hollowed it out but fell into the hole he had made. |
He becomes the victim of his own destructive plans and the violence he intended for others falls on his own head. | 16His trouble comes back on his own head; his own violence comes down on top of his head. |
I will thank the LORD for his justice; I will sing praises to the sovereign LORD! | 17I will thank the LORD for his righteousness; I will sing about the name of the LORD Most High. |
