Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness,1Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness
where for forty days he endured temptations from the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, he was famished.2for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone.'" 4But Jesus answered him, "It is written: Man must not live on bread alone."
Then the devil led him up to a high place and showed him in a flash all the kingdoms of the world.5So he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And he said to him, "To you I will grant this whole realm--and the glory that goes along with it, for it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.6The devil said to him, "I will give you their splendor and all this authority, because it has been given over to me, and I can give it to anyone I want.
So then, if you will worship me, all this will be yours."7If you, then, will worship me, all will be yours."
Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" 8And Jesus answered him, "It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only."
Then the devil brought him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the highest point of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,9So he took him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.
for it is written, 'He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,'10For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you,
and 'with their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"11and they will support you with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."
Jesus answered him, "It is said, 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"12And Jesus answered him, "It is said: Do not test the Lord your God."
So when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time. 13After the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
Then Jesus, in the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the surrounding countryside.14Then Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity.
He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by all. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, being praised by everyone.
Now Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read,16He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.
and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 17The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the scroll, he found the place where it was written:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, 18The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord' s favor." 19to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.20He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him.
Then he began to tell them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled even as you heard it being read."21He began by saying to them, "Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled."
All were speaking well of him, and were amazed at the gracious words coming out of his mouth. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"22They were all speaking well of him and were amazed by the gracious words that came from his mouth; yet they said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"
Jesus said to them, "No doubt you will quote to me the proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself!' and say, 'What we have heard that you did in Capernaum, do here in your hometown too.'"23Then he said to them, "No doubt you will quote this proverb to me: 'Doctor, heal yourself. What we've heard that took place in Capernaum, do here in your hometown also.'"
And he added, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.24He also said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up three and a half years, and there was a great famine over all the land.25But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah's days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.
Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to a woman who was a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them except a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.
And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, yet none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."27And in the prophet Elisha's time, there were many in Israel who had leprosy, and yet not one of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
When they heard this, all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage.28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was enraged.
They got up, forced him out of the town, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff.29They got up, drove him out of town, and brought him to the edge of the hill that their town was built on, intending to hurl him over the cliff.
But he passed through the crowd and went on his way. 30But he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.
So he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people.31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbath.
They were amazed at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. 32They were astonished at his teaching because his message had authority.
Now in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,33In the synagogue there was a man with an unclean demonic spirit who cried out with a loud voice,
"Ha! Leave us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God."34"Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come out of him!" Then, after the demon threw the man down in their midst, he came out of him without hurting him.35But Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be silent and come out of him!" And throwing him down before them, the demon came out of him without hurting him at all.
They were all amazed and began to say to one another, "What's happening here? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"36Amazement came over them all, and they were saying to one another, "What is this message? For he commands the unclean spirits with authority and power, and they come out!"
So the news about him spread into all areas of the region. 37And news about him began to go out to every place in the vicinity.
After Jesus left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.38After he left the synagogue, he entered Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked him about her.
So he stood over her, commanded the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and began to serve them. 39So he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and began to serve them.
As the sun was setting, all those who had any relatives sick with various diseases brought them to Jesus. He placed his hands on every one of them and healed them.40When the sun was setting, all those who had anyone sick with various diseases brought them to him. As he laid his hands on each one of them, he healed them.
Demons also came out of many, crying out, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them, and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 41Also, demons were coming out of many, shouting and saying, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Christ.
The next morning Jesus departed and went to a deserted place. Yet the crowds were seeking him, and they came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.42When it was day, he went out and made his way to a deserted place. But the crowds were searching for him. They came to him and tried to keep him from leaving them.
But Jesus said to them, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns too, for that is what I was sent to do."43But he said to them, "It is necessary for me to proclaim the good news about the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because I was sent for this purpose."
So he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea. 44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
