For the choir director; according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph. My voice rises to God, and I will cry aloud; My voice rises to God, and He will hear me. | 1I cry out to God; yes, I shout. Oh, that God would listen to me! |
In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord; In the night my hand was stretched out without weariness; My soul refused to be comforted. | 2When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted. |
When I remember God, then I am disturbed; When I sigh, then my spirit grows faint. Selah. | 3I think of God, and I moan, overwhelmed with longing for his help. Interlude |
You have held my eyelids open; I am so troubled that I cannot speak. | 4You don’t let me sleep. I am too distressed even to pray! |
I have considered the days of old, The years of long ago. | 5I think of the good old days, long since ended, |
I will remember my song in the night; I will meditate with my heart, And my spirit ponders: | 6when my nights were filled with joyful songs. I search my soul and ponder the difference now. |
Will the Lord reject forever? And will He never be favorable again? | 7Has the Lord rejected me forever? Will he never again be kind to me? |
Has His lovingkindness ceased forever? Has His promise come to an end forever? | 8Is his unfailing love gone forever? Have his promises permanently failed? |
Has God forgotten to be gracious, Or has He in anger withdrawn His compassion? Selah. | 9Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he slammed the door on his compassion? Interlude |
Then I said, "It is my grief, That the right hand of the Most High has changed." | 10And I said, “This is my fate; the Most High has turned his hand against me.” |
I shall remember the deeds of the LORD; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. | 11But then I recall all you have done, O LORD; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. |
I will meditate on all Your work And muse on Your deeds. | 12They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works. |
Your way, O God, is holy; What god is great like our God? | 13O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you? |
You are the God who works wonders; You have made known Your strength among the peoples. | 14You are the God of great wonders! You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations. |
You have by Your power redeemed Your people, The sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah. | 15By your strong arm, you redeemed your people, the descendants of Jacob and Joseph. Interlude |
The waters saw You, O God; The waters saw You, they were in anguish; The deeps also trembled. | 16When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled! The sea quaked to its very depths. |
The clouds poured out water; The skies gave forth a sound; Your arrows flashed here and there. | 17The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky. Your arrows of lightning flashed. |
The sound of Your thunder was in the whirlwind; The lightnings lit up the world; The earth trembled and shook. | 18Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world! The earth trembled and shook. |
Your way was in the sea And Your paths in the mighty waters, And Your footprints may not be known. | 19Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters— a pathway no one knew was there! |
You led Your people like a flock By the hand of Moses and Aaron. | 20You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep, with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds. |
