New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD concerning Cush, a Benjamite. O LORD my God, in You I have taken refuge; Save me from all those who pursue me, and deliver me, | 1I come to you for protection, O LORD my God. Save me from my persecutors—rescue me! |
Or he will tear my soul like a lion, Dragging me away, while there is none to deliver. | 2If you don’t, they will maul me like a lion, tearing me to pieces with no one to rescue me. |
O LORD my God, if I have done this, If there is injustice in my hands, | 3O LORD my God, if I have done wrong or am guilty of injustice, |
If I have rewarded evil to my friend, Or have plundered him who without cause was my adversary, | 4if I have betrayed a friend or plundered my enemy without cause, |
Let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it; And let him trample my life down to the ground And lay my glory in the dust. Selah. | 5then let my enemies capture me. Let them trample me into the ground and drag my honor in the dust. Interlude |
Arise, O LORD, in Your anger; Lift up Yourself against the rage of my adversaries, And arouse Yourself for me; You have appointed judgment. | 6Arise, O LORD, in anger! Stand up against the fury of my enemies! Wake up, my God, and bring justice! |
Let the assembly of the peoples encompass You, And over them return on high. | 7Gather the nations before you. Rule over them from on high. |
The LORD judges the peoples; Vindicate me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and my integrity that is in me. | 8The LORD judges the nations. Declare me righteous, O LORD, for I am innocent, O Most High! |
O let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous; For the righteous God tries the hearts and minds. | 9End the evil of those who are wicked, and defend the righteous. For you look deep within the mind and heart, O righteous God. |
My shield is with God, Who saves the upright in heart. | 10God is my shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. |
God is a righteous judge, And a God who has indignation every day. | 11God is an honest judge. He is angry with the wicked every day. |
If a man does not repent, He will sharpen His sword; He has bent His bow and made it ready. | 12If a person does not repent, God will sharpen his sword; he will bend and string his bow. |
He has also prepared for Himself deadly weapons; He makes His arrows fiery shafts. | 13He will prepare his deadly weapons and shoot his flaming arrows. |
Behold, he travails with wickedness, And he conceives mischief and brings forth falsehood. | 14The wicked conceive evil; they are pregnant with trouble and give birth to lies. |
He has dug a pit and hollowed it out, And has fallen into the hole which he made. | 15They dig a deep pit to trap others, then fall into it themselves. |
His mischief will return upon his own head, And his violence will descend upon his own pate. | 16The trouble they make for others backfires on them. The violence they plan falls on their own heads. |
I will give thanks to the LORD according to His righteousness And will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. | 17I will thank the LORD because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High. |
