New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
You shall not make for yourselves idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves an image or a sacred pillar, nor shall you place a figured stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am the LORD your God. | 1"'Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the LORD your God. |
'You shall keep My sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary; I am the LORD. | 2"'Observe my Sabbaths and have reverence for my sanctuary. I am the LORD. |
'If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out, | 3"'If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, |
then I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. | 4I will send you rain in its season, and the ground will yield its crops and the trees their fruit. |
'Indeed, your threshing will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. You will thus eat your food to the full and live securely in your land. | 5Your threshing will continue until grape harvest and the grape harvest will continue until planting, and you will eat all the food you want and live in safety in your land. |
I shall also grant peace in the land, so that you may lie down with no one making you tremble. I shall also eliminate harmful beasts from the land, and no sword will pass through your land. | 6"'I will grant peace in the land, and you will lie down and no one will make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and the sword will not pass through your country. |
'But you will chase your enemies and they will fall before you by the sword; | 7You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you. |
five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. | 8Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall by the sword before you. |
'So I will turn toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will confirm My covenant with you. | 9"'I will look on you with favor and make you fruitful and increase your numbers, and I will keep my covenant with you. |
'You will eat the old supply and clear out the old because of the new. | 10You will still be eating last year's harvest when you will have to move it out to make room for the new. |
'Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. | 11I will put my dwelling place among you, and I will not abhor you. |
'I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. | 12I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. | 13I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt so that you would no longer be slaves to the Egyptians; I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high. |
'But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, | 14"'But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, |
if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant, | 15and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, |
I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away; also, you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up. | 16then I will do this to you: I will bring on you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and sap your strength. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. |
'I will set My face against you so that you will be struck down before your enemies; and those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one is pursuing you. | 17I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you. |
'If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. | 18"'If after all this you will not listen to me, I will punish you for your sins seven times over. |
'I will also break down your pride of power; I will also make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. | 19I will break down your stubborn pride and make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze. |
'Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit. | 20Your strength will be spent in vain, because your soil will not yield its crops, nor will the trees of your land yield their fruit. |
'If then, you act with hostility against Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you seven times according to your sins. | 21"'If you remain hostile toward me and refuse to listen to me, I will multiply your afflictions seven times over, as your sins deserve. |
'I will let loose among you the beasts of the field, which will bereave you of your children and destroy your cattle and reduce your number so that your roads lie deserted. | 22I will send wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few in number that your roads will be deserted. |
'And if by these things you are not turned to Me, but act with hostility against Me, | 23"'If in spite of these things you do not accept my correction but continue to be hostile toward me, |
then I will act with hostility against you; and I, even I, will strike you seven times for your sins. | 24I myself will be hostile toward you and will afflict you for your sins seven times over. |
'I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you, so that you shall be delivered into enemy hands. | 25And I will bring the sword on you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands. |
'When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread in rationed amounts, so that you will eat and not be satisfied. | 26When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women will be able to bake your bread in one oven, and they will dole out the bread by weight. You will eat, but you will not be satisfied. |
'Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me, | 27"'If in spite of this you still do not listen to me but continue to be hostile toward me, |
then I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins. | 28then in my anger I will be hostile toward you, and I myself will punish you for your sins seven times over. |
'Further, you will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters you will eat. | 29You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. |
'I then will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and heap your remains on the remains of your idols, for My soul shall abhor you. | 30I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you. |
'I will lay waste your cities as well and will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your soothing aromas. | 31I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings. |
'I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled over it. | 32I myself will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who live there will be appalled. |
'You, however, I will scatter among the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become waste. | 33I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out my sword and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste, and your cities will lie in ruins. |
'Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. | 34Then the land will enjoy its sabbath years all the time that it lies desolate and you are in the country of your enemies; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. |
All the days of its desolation it will observe the rest which it did not observe on your sabbaths, while you were living on it. | 35All the time that it lies desolate, the land will have the rest it did not have during the sabbaths you lived in it. |
'As for those of you who may be left, I will also bring weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee as though from the sword, and they will fall. | 36"'As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. They will run as though fleeing from the sword, and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them. |
They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand up before your enemies. | 37They will stumble over one another as though fleeing from the sword, even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand before your enemies. |
'But you will perish among the nations, and your enemies' land will consume you. | 38You will perish among the nations; the land of your enemies will devour you. |
'So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them. | 39Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors' sins they will waste away. |
'If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me-- | 40"'But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors--their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, |
I also was acting with hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies-- or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they then make amends for their iniquity, | 41which made me hostile toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies--then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, |
then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. | 42I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. |
'For the land will be abandoned by them, and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making amends for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and their soul abhorred My statutes. | 43For the land will be deserted by them and will enjoy its sabbaths while it lies desolate without them. They will pay for their sins because they rejected my laws and abhorred my decrees. |
'Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so abhor them as to destroy them, breaking My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God. | 44Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them or abhor them so as to destroy them completely, breaking my covenant with them. I am the LORD their God. |
'But I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.'" | 45But for their sake I will remember the covenant with their ancestors whom I brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the LORD.'" |
These are the statutes and ordinances and laws which the LORD established between Himself and the sons of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. | 46These are the decrees, the laws and the regulations that the LORD established at Mount Sinai between himself and the Israelites through Moses. |
