You shall not make for yourselves idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves an image or a sacred pillar, nor shall you place a figured stone in your land to bow down to it; for I am the LORD your God. | 1Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God. |
'You shall keep My sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary; I am the LORD. | 2Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. |
'If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out, | 3If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them; |
then I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. | 4Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. |
'Indeed, your threshing will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. You will thus eat your food to the full and live securely in your land. | 5And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely. |
I shall also grant peace in the land, so that you may lie down with no one making you tremble. I shall also eliminate harmful beasts from the land, and no sword will pass through your land. | 6And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. |
'But you will chase your enemies and they will fall before you by the sword; | 7And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword. |
five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. | 8And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword. |
'So I will turn toward you and make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will confirm My covenant with you. | 9For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you. |
'You will eat the old supply and clear out the old because of the new. | 10And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. |
'Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. | 11And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. |
'I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. | 12And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. |
I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect. | 13I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright. |
'But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, | 14But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; |
if, instead, you reject My statutes, and if your soul abhors My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant, | 15And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant: |
I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the soul to pine away; also, you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up. | 16I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. |
'I will set My face against you so that you will be struck down before your enemies; and those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one is pursuing you. | 17And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. |
'If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. | 18And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. |
'I will also break down your pride of power; I will also make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. | 19And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass: |
'Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit. | 20And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. |
'If then, you act with hostility against Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you seven times according to your sins. | 21And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins. |
'I will let loose among you the beasts of the field, which will bereave you of your children and destroy your cattle and reduce your number so that your roads lie deserted. | 22I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. |
'And if by these things you are not turned to Me, but act with hostility against Me, | 23And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; |
then I will act with hostility against you; and I, even I, will strike you seven times for your sins. | 24Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. |
'I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send pestilence among you, so that you shall be delivered into enemy hands. | 25And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy. |
'When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread in rationed amounts, so that you will eat and not be satisfied. | 26And when I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and ye shall eat, and not be satisfied. |
'Yet if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but act with hostility against Me, | 27And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; |
then I will act with wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will punish you seven times for your sins. | 28Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. |
'Further, you will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters you will eat. | 29And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat. |
'I then will destroy your high places, and cut down your incense altars, and heap your remains on the remains of your idols, for My soul shall abhor you. | 30And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you. |
'I will lay waste your cities as well and will make your sanctuaries desolate, and I will not smell your soothing aromas. | 31And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours. |
'I will make the land desolate so that your enemies who settle in it will be appalled over it. | 32And I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell therein shall be astonished at it. |
'You, however, I will scatter among the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become waste. | 33And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste. |
'Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. | 34Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies' land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths. |
All the days of its desolation it will observe the rest which it did not observe on your sabbaths, while you were living on it. | 35As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it. |
'As for those of you who may be left, I will also bring weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will chase them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee as though from the sword, and they will fall. | 36And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth. |
They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength to stand up before your enemies. | 37And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies. |
'But you will perish among the nations, and your enemies' land will consume you. | 38And ye shall perish among the heathen, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up. |
'So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them. | 39And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies' lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. |
'If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their forefathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also in their acting with hostility against Me-- | 40If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; |
I also was acting with hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies-- or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that they then make amends for their iniquity, | 41And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: |
then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also My covenant with Isaac, and My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. | 42Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. |
'For the land will be abandoned by them, and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making amends for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and their soul abhorred My statutes. | 43The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes. |
'Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so abhor them as to destroy them, breaking My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God. | 44And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God. |
'But I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the LORD.'" | 45But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD. |
These are the statutes and ordinances and laws which the LORD established between Himself and the sons of Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. | 46These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses. |
