Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, | 1Paul, a slave of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to build up the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness, |
in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago, | 2in the hope of eternal life that God, who cannot lie, promised before time began. |
but at the proper time manifested, even His word, in the proclamation with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Savior, | 3In His own time He has revealed His message in the proclamation that I was entrusted with by the command of God our Savior: |
To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. | 4To Titus, my true son in our common faith. Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. |
For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, | 5The reason I left you in Crete was to set right what was left undone and, as I directed you, to appoint elders in every town: |
namely, if any man is above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion. | 6one who is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of wildness or rebellion. |
For the overseer must be above reproach as God's steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, | 7For an overseer, as God's administrator, must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not addicted to wine, not a bully, not greedy for money, |
but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled, | 8but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled, |
holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. | 9holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it. |
For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, | 10For there are also many rebellious people, full of empty talk and deception, especially those from Judaism. |
who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. | 11It is necessary to silence them; they overthrow whole households by teaching what they shouldn't in order to get money dishonestly. |
One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." | 12One of their very own prophets said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons. |
This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith, | 13This testimony is true. So, rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith |
not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth. | 14and may not pay attention to Jewish myths and the commands of men who reject the truth. |
To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. | 15To the pure, everything is pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; in fact, both their mind and conscience are defiled. |
They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed. | 16They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and disqualified for any good work. |
