| 9holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict. | 9He must hold firmly to the faithful word as it was taught, so that he can encourage others by sound teaching and refute those who contradict it. |
| 10For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, | 10For many are rebellious and full of empty talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision, |
| 11who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. | 11who must be silenced. For the sake of dishonorable gain, they undermine entire households and teach things they should not. |
