New American Standard Bible 1995English Standard Version
In Iconium they entered the synagogue of the Jews together, and spoke in such a manner that a large number of people believed, both of Jews and of Greeks.1Now at Iconium they entered together into the Jewish synagogue and spoke in such a way that a great number of both Jews and Greeks believed.
But the Jews who disbelieved stirred up the minds of the Gentiles and embittered them against the brethren.2But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.
Therefore they spent a long time there speaking boldly with reliance upon the Lord, who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting that signs and wonders be done by their hands.3So they remained for a long time, speaking boldly for the Lord, who bore witness to the word of his grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
But the people of the city were divided; and some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.4But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews and some with the apostles.
And when an attempt was made by both the Gentiles and the Jews with their rulers, to mistreat and to stone them,5When an attempt was made by both Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to mistreat them and to stone them,
they became aware of it and fled to the cities of Lycaonia, Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding region;6they learned of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding country,
and there they continued to preach the gospel.7and there they continued to preach the gospel.
At Lystra a man was sitting who had no strength in his feet, lame from his mother's womb, who had never walked.8Now at Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet. He was crippled from birth and had never walked.
This man was listening to Paul as he spoke, who, when he had fixed his gaze on him and had seen that he had faith to be made well,9He listened to Paul speaking. And Paul, looking intently at him and seeing that he had faith to be made well,
said with a loud voice, "Stand upright on your feet." And he leaped up and began to walk.10said in a loud voice, “Stand upright on your feet.” And he sprang up and began walking.
When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they raised their voice, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have become like men and have come down to us."11And when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they lifted up their voices, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!”
And they began calling Barnabas, Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.12Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.13And the priest of Zeus, whose temple was at the entrance to the city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates and wanted to offer sacrifice with the crowds.
But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their robes and rushed out into the crowd, crying out14But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it, they tore their garments and rushed out into the crowd, crying out,
and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We are also men of the same nature as you, and preach the gospel to you that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, WHO MADE THE HEAVEN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM.15“Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.
"In the generations gone by He permitted all the nations to go their own ways;16In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways.
and yet He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good and gave you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness."17Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
Even saying these things, with difficulty they restrained the crowds from offering sacrifice to them.18Even with these words they scarcely restrained the people from offering sacrifice to them.
But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.19But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead.
But while the disciples stood around him, he got up and entered the city. The next day he went away with Barnabas to Derbe.20But when the disciples gathered about him, he rose up and entered the city, and on the next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.
After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,21When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,
strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, "Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God."22strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
When they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.23And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
They passed through Pisidia and came into Pamphylia.24Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia.
When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.25And when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia,
From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished.26and from there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had fulfilled.
When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.27And when they arrived and gathered the church together, they declared all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.
And they spent a long time with the disciples.28And they remained no little time with the disciples.
