New American Standard Bible 1995 | English Standard Version |
Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. | 1Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. |
For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. | 2For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. |
While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. | 3While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. |
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; | 4But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. |
for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; | 5For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. |
so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. | 6So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. |
For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. | 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. |
But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. | 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. |
For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 9For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, |
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. | 10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. |
Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. | 11Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. |
But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, | 12We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, |
and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. | 13and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. |
We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. | 14And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. |
See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. | 15See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. |
Rejoice always; | 16Rejoice always, |
pray without ceasing; | 17pray without ceasing, |
in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. | 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. |
Do not quench the Spirit; | 19Do not quench the Spirit. |
do not despise prophetic utterances. | 20Do not despise prophecies, |
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; | 21but test everything; hold fast what is good. |
abstain from every form of evil. | 22Abstain from every form of evil. |
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. | 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. |
Brethren, pray for us. | 25Brothers, pray for us. |
Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. | 26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. |
I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren. | 27I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. | 28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. |
