| 1Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, | 1Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same understanding--because the one who suffers in the flesh is finished with sin-- |
| 2so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. | 2in order to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for human desires, but for God's will. |
| 3For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. | 3For there has already been enough time spent in doing what the Gentiles choose to do: carrying on in unrestrained behavior, evil desires, drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and lawless idolatry. |
| 4In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; | 4They are surprised that you don't join them in the same flood of wild living--and they slander you. |

| 12Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; | 12Dear friends, don't be surprised when the fiery ordeal comes among you to test you as if something unusual were happening to you. |
| 13but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. | 13Instead, rejoice as you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may also rejoice with great joy when his glory is revealed. |
| 14If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. | 14If you are ridiculed for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. |
| 15Make sure that none of you suffers as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or a troublesome meddler; | 15Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler. |
| 16but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. | 16But if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed but let him glorify God in having that name. |

| 18AND IF IT IS WITH DIFFICULTY THAT THE RIGHTEOUS IS SAVED, WHAT WILL BECOME OF THE GODLESS MAN AND THE SINNER? | 18And if a righteous person is saved with difficulty, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? |
| 19Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. | 19So then, let those who suffer according to God's will entrust themselves to a faithful Creator while doing what is good. |
