Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: | 1Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go out from your country, your relatives, and your father's household to the land that I will show you. |
And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: | 2Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great, so that you will exemplify divine blessing. |
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. | 3I will bless those who bless you, but the one who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the families of the earth will bless one another by your name." |
So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. | 4So Abram left, just as the LORD had told him to do, and Lot went with him. (Now Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.) |
And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. | 5And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they left for the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan. |
And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. | 6Abram traveled through the land as far as the oak tree of Moreh at Shechem. (At that time the Canaanites were in the land.) |
And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. | 7The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. |
And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. | 8Then he moved from there to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and worshiped the LORD. |
And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south. | 9Abram continually journeyed by stages down to the Negev. |
And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land. | 10There was a famine in the land, so Abram went down to Egypt to stay for a while because the famine was severe. |
And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon: | 11As he approached Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman. |
Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive. | 12When the Egyptians see you they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will keep you alive. |
Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee. | 13So tell them you are my sister so that it may go well for me because of you and my life will be spared on account of you." |
And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair. | 14When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. |
The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. | 15When Pharaoh's officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. So Abram's wife was taken into the household of Pharaoh, |
And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels. | 16and he did treat Abram well on account of her. Abram received sheep and cattle, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. |
And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife. | 17But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases because of Sarai, Abram's wife. |
And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife? | 18So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me that she was your wife? |
Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way. | 19Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Here is your wife! Take her and go!" |
And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had. | 20Pharaoh gave his men orders about Abram, and so they expelled him, along with his wife and all his possessions. |
