King James Bible | NET Bible |
And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. | 1The whole earth had a common language and a common vocabulary. |
And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. | 2When the people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. |
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. | 3Then they said to one another, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." (They had brick instead of stone and tar instead of mortar.) |
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. | 4Then they said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves. Otherwise we will be scattered across the face of the entire earth." |
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. | 5But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the people had started building. |
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. | 6And the LORD said, "If as one people all sharing a common language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be beyond them. |
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. | 7Come, let's go down and confuse their language so they won't be able to understand each other." |
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. | 8So the LORD scattered them from there across the face of the entire earth, and they stopped building the city. |
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. | 9That is why its name was called Babel--because there the LORD confused the language of the entire world, and from there the LORD scattered them across the face of the entire earth. |

And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. | 28Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans, while his father Terah was still alive. |
And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. | 29And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah. |
But Sarai was barren; she had no child. | 30But Sarai was barren; she had no children. |
And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there. | 31Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (the son of Haran), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and with them he set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. When they came to Haran, they settled there. |
