The burden of Tyre. Howl, ye ships of Tarshish; for it is laid waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of Chittim it is revealed to them. | 1The oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, For Tyre is destroyed, without house or harbor; It is reported to them from the land of Cyprus. |
Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished. | 2Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland, You merchants of Sidon; Your messengers crossed the sea |
And by great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river, is her revenue; and she is a mart of nations. | 3And were on many waters. The grain of the Nile, the harvest of the River was her revenue; And she was the market of nations. |
Be thou ashamed, O Zidon: for the sea hath spoken, even the strength of the sea, saying, I travail not, nor bring forth children, neither do I nourish up young men, nor bring up virgins. | 4Be ashamed, O Sidon; For the sea speaks, the stronghold of the sea, saying, "I have neither travailed nor given birth, I have neither brought up young men nor reared virgins." |
As at the report concerning Egypt, so shall they be sorely pained at the report of Tyre. | 5When the report reaches Egypt, They will be in anguish at the report of Tyre. |
Pass ye over to Tarshish; howl, ye inhabitants of the isle. | 6Pass over to Tarshish; Wail, O inhabitants of the coastland. |
Is this your joyous city, whose antiquity is of ancient days? her own feet shall carry her afar off to sojourn. | 7Is this your jubilant city, Whose origin is from antiquity, Whose feet used to carry her to colonize distant places? |
Who hath taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honourable of the earth? | 8Who has planned this against Tyre, the bestower of crowns, Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth? |
The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth. | 9The LORD of hosts has planned it, to defile the pride of all beauty, To despise all the honored of the earth. |
Pass through thy land as a river, O daughter of Tarshish: there is no more strength. | 10Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish, There is no more restraint. |
He stretched out his hand over the sea, he shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof. | 11He has stretched His hand out over the sea, He has made the kingdoms tremble; The LORD has given a command concerning Canaan to demolish its strongholds. |
And he said, Thou shalt no more rejoice, O thou oppressed virgin, daughter of Zidon: arise, pass over to Chittim; there also shalt thou have no rest. | 12He has said, "You shall exult no more, O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon. Arise, pass over to Cyprus; even there you will find no rest." |
Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not, till the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin. | 13Behold, the land of the Chaldeans-- this is the people which was not; Assyria appointed it for desert creatures-- they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, they made it a ruin. |
Howl, ye ships of Tarshish: for your strength is laid waste. | 14Wail, O ships of Tarshish, For your stronghold is destroyed. |
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king: after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an harlot. | 15Now in that day Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot: |
Take an harp, go about the city, thou harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that thou mayest be remembered. | 16Take your harp, walk about the city, O forgotten harlot; Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs, That you may be remembered. |
And it shall come to pass after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her hire, and shall commit fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth. | 17It will come about at the end of seventy years that the LORD will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her harlot's wages and will play the harlot with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth. |
And her merchandise and her hire shall be holiness to the LORD: it shall not be treasured nor laid up; for her merchandise shall be for them that dwell before the LORD, to eat sufficiently, and for durable clothing. | 18Her gain and her harlot's wages will be set apart to the LORD; it will not be stored up or hoarded, but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who dwell in the presence of the LORD. |
