KJV Parallel ESV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleEnglish Standard Version
Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,1So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.
As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:2Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—
If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.
To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,4As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious,
Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.5you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.6For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,7So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”
And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.8and “A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.” They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.10Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;11Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.12Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;13Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme,
Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.14or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.
For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:15For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.16Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.
Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.17Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.18Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.
For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully.19For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.
For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.20For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:22He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.
Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:23When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.
Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.24He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.25For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
