And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; | 1And you were dead in your trespasses and sins |
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: | 2in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the disobedient. |
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. | 3We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly desires, carrying out the inclinations of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath as the others were also. |
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, | 4But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, |
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) | 5made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! |
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: | 6He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, |
That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. | 7so that in the coming ages he might display the immeasurable riches of his grace through his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. |
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: | 8For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God's gift-- |
Not of works, lest any man should boast. | 9not from works, so that no one can boast. |
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. | 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do. |
Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; | 11So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh--called "the uncircumcised" by those called "the circumcised," which is done in the flesh by human hands. |
That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: | 12At that time you were without Christ, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of promise, without hope and without God in the world. |
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. | 13But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. |
For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; | 14For he is our peace, who made both groups one and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In his flesh, |
Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; | 15he made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that he might create in himself one new man from the two, resulting in peace. |
And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: | 16He did this so that he might reconcile both to God in one body through the cross by which he put the hostility to death. |
And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. | 17He came and proclaimed the good news of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. |
For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. | 18For through him we both have access in one spirit to the Father. |
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; | 19So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God's household, |
And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; | 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. |
In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: | 21In him the whole building, being put together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. |
In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. | 22In him you are also being built together for God's dwelling in the Spirit. |
