Then the family leaders of the descendants of Levi approached Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua, along with the family leaders of the people of Israel. 1Then the leaders of the tribe of Levi came to consult with Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders of the other tribes of Israel.
It was at Shiloh in the land of Canaan that they told them, "The LORD ordered through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, along with their pasture lands for our livestock."2They came to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said, “The LORD commanded Moses to give us towns to live in and pasturelands for our livestock.”
So, just as the Lord had said, the Israelis set aside cities for the descendants of Levi from a portion of their own inheritances, along with their grazing lands. 3So by the command of the LORD the people of Israel gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own grants of land.
The lottery went to the families of the descendants of Kohath. So the descendants of Aaron the priest, who were descendants of Levi, received thirteen cities by random lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. 4The descendants of Aaron, who were members of the Kohathite clan within the tribe of Levi, were allotted thirteen towns that were originally assigned to the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
The rest of the descendants of Kohath received ten cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.5The other families of the Kohathite clan were allotted ten towns from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh located in Bashan. 6The clan of Gershon was allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
The descendants of Merari, allocated according to their families, received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.7The clan of Merari was allotted twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
The Israelis apportioned these cities, along with their pasture lands, to the descendants of Levi by random lot, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.8So the Israelites obeyed the LORD’s command to Moses and assigned these towns and pasturelands to the Levites by casting sacred lots.
From the tribes of the descendants of Judah and Simeon, they gave these cities, delineated by name: 9The Israelites gave the following towns from the tribes of Judah and Simeon
for the descendants of Aaron, one of the families of the descendants of Kohath, of the descendants of Levi, since the lot fell in their favor first. 10to the descendants of Aaron, who were members of the Kohathite clan within the tribe of Levi, since the sacred lot fell to them first:
They gave them Kiriath-arba, also known as Hebron, (Arba was named after the ancestor of Anak), in the hill country of Judah, along with its surrounding pasture lands. 11Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), in the hill country of Judah, along with its surrounding pasturelands. (Arba was an ancestor of Anak.)
But the fields adjoining the city and its surrounding villages were given to Jephunneh's son Caleb.12But the open fields beyond the town and the surrounding villages were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
So they gave Hebron to the descendants of Aaron the priest to serve as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, Libnah with its pasture lands, 13The following towns with their pasturelands were given to the descendants of Aaron the priest: Hebron (a city of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone), Libnah,
Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands, 14Jattir, Eshtemoa,
Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands, 15Holon, Debir,
Ain with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands, for a total of nine cities from these two tribes.16Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh—nine towns from these two tribes.
From the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands, 17From the tribe of Benjamin the priests were given the following towns with their pasturelands: Gibeon, Geba,
Anathoth with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities. 18Anathoth, and Almon—four towns.
All of the cities allocated to the priests, who were descendants of Aaron, numbered thirteen, along with their pasture lands.19So in all, thirteen towns with their pasturelands were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
Cities from the tribe of Ephraim were also allotted to the families of the descendants of Kohath, that is, to the rest of the descendants of Kohath, who were descendants of Levi. 20The rest of the Kohathite clan from the tribe of Levi was allotted the following towns and pasturelands from the tribe of Ephraim:
Shechem was allocated to them as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, in the mountainous region of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasture lands, 21Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone), Gezer,

From the half-tribe of Manasseh were allocated Taanach with its pasture lands and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands, for a total of two cities. 25The half-tribe of Manasseh allotted the following towns with their pasturelands to the priests: Taanach and Gath-rimmon—two towns.
All the cities with their pasture lands for the families of the rest of the descendants of Kohath numbered ten.26So in all, ten towns with their pasturelands were given to the rest of the Kohathite clan.
To the descendants of Gershon (one of the Levitical families) from the half-tribe of Manasseh were allocated Golan in Bashan as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, and Beeshterah with its pasture lands, for a total of two cities.27The descendants of Gershon, another clan within the tribe of Levi, received the following towns with their pasturelands from the half-tribe of Manasseh: Golan in Bashan (a city of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone) and Be-eshterah—two towns.
From the tribe of Issachar were allocated Kishion with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands, 28From the tribe of Issachar they received the following towns with their pasturelands: Kishion, Daberath,

From the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its pasture lands were allocated as a city of refuge for the unintentional killer, Hammoth-dor with its pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands, for a total of three cities.32From the tribe of Naphtali they received the following towns with their pasturelands: Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for those who accidentally killed someone), Hammoth-dor, and Kartan—three towns.
All the cities of the descendants of Gershon according to their families totaled thirteen, including their pasture lands.33So in all, thirteen towns with their pasturelands were allotted to the clan of Gershon.
From the tribe of Zebulun were allocated to the descendants of Merari (that is, the rest of the descendants of Levi) Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands, 34The rest of the Levites—the Merari clan—were given the following towns with their pasturelands from the tribe of Zebulun: Jokneam, Kartah,
Dimnah with its pasture lands, and Nahalal with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.35Dimnah, and Nahalal—four towns.
From the tribe of Reuben were allocated Bezer with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands, 36From the tribe of Reuben they received the following towns with their pasturelands: Bezer, Jahaz,
Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.37Kedemoth, and Mephaath—four towns.

So the entire allocation to the descendants of Merari (that is, the rest of the families of the descendants of Levi) according to their families totaled twelve cities.40So in all, twelve towns were allotted to the clan of Merari.
All of the cities of the descendants of Levi that had been set apart among the territorial possession of the Israelis totaled 48, along with their pasture lands. 41The total number of towns and pasturelands within Israelite territory given to the Levites came to forty-eight.
These cities were each surrounded by pasture lands, as was the case with all of these cities. 42Every one of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it.
So the LORD gave all of the land to Israel that he had promised to give their ancestors, and they took possession and settled there in it. 43So the LORD gave to Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there.
The LORD gave them peace all around them, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of their enemies was able to oppose them—the LORD placed all of their enemies under their control. 44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had solemnly promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD helped them conquer all their enemies.
Not one of the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed—all of them came about. 45Not a single one of all the good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled; everything he had spoken came true.
