Job continued with his discussion and said: | 1Job continued speaking: |
"The living God has withheld justice from me; the Almighty has made my life bitter. | 2“I vow by the living God, who has taken away my rights, by the Almighty who has embittered my soul— |
As long as I can breathe; as long as God's breath is in my nostrils, | 3As long as I live, while I have breath from God, |
I won't speak lies nor will I utter deceit. | 4my lips will speak no evil, and my tongue will speak no lies. |
Far be it from me to admit that you're right! I intend to maintain my integrity even if it kills me! | 5I will never concede that you are right; I will defend my integrity until I die. |
I'll retain my righteousness and not compromise it; my conscience won't rebuke me at any time. | 6I will maintain my innocence without wavering. My conscience is clear for as long as I live. |
"May my enemy be like the wicked; my adversary like the unjust. | 7“May my enemy be punished like the wicked, my adversary like those who do evil. |
For where is the hope of the godless when he is eliminated; when God takes away his life? | 8For what hope do the godless have when God cuts them off and takes away their life? |
Will God hear his cry when distress overtakes him? | 9Will God listen to their cry when trouble comes upon them? |
Will he take delight in the Almighty? Will he call on God at all times?" | 10Can they take delight in the Almighty? Can they call to God at any time? |
"I'll teach you about the power of God, that which is with the Almighty I won't conceal. | 11I will teach you about God’s power. I will not conceal anything concerning the Almighty. |
Look! All of you have been watching, so why have you become so completely worthless? | 12But you have seen all this, yet you say all these useless things to me. |
"This is what a wicked person inherits from God, and what the ruthless will receive from the Almighty: | 13“This is what the wicked will receive from God; this is their inheritance from the Almighty. |
If he has many children, their destiny is to die by the sword, and his descendants won't have enough food. | 14They may have many children, but the children will die in war or starve to death. |
Those who do survive him disease will bury, and his widow won't even weep. | 15Those who survive will die of a plague, and not even their widows will mourn them. |
"Though he hoards silver like dust, and stores away garments like clay, | 16“Evil people may have piles of money and may store away mounds of clothing. |
whatever he stores up, the righteous will wear, and the innocent will inherit that silver! | 17But the righteous will wear that clothing, and the innocent will divide that money. |
"He has built his house like a moth's cocoon, like a temporary sunshade that a watchman makes. | 18The wicked build houses as fragile as a spider’s web, as flimsy as a shelter made of branches. |
He will go to bed wealthy, but won't be doing that anymore! When he opens his eyes, it will be gone! | 19The wicked go to bed rich but wake to find that all their wealth is gone. |
Terror will overtake him like a flood, at night, a tornado will sweep him away. | 20Terror overwhelms them like a flood, and they are blown away in the storms of the night. |
He'll be swept up by a storm wind and carried away; he'll be whirled away from his place. | 21The east wind carries them away, and they are gone. It sweeps them away. |
It will toss him around without pity. He'll try to break free from its grip, | 22It whirls down on them without mercy. They struggle to flee from its power. |
but it will clap its hands over him, hissing at him as it lunges toward him." | 23But everyone jeers at them and mocks them. |
