International Standard Version | New Living Translation |
In reply, Job responded: | 1Then Job spoke again: |
"What a help you are to the weak! How powerfully you deliver those without strength! | 2“How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the weak! |
What counsel you provide to the fool! What insight you provide so abundantly! | 3How you have enlightened my stupidity! What wise advice you have offered! |
Who helped you say all of this? Who inspired you?" | 4Where have you gotten all these wise sayings? Whose spirit speaks through you? |
"The ghosts of the dead writhe under the waters along with those who live there with them. | 5“The dead tremble— those who live beneath the waters. |
Sheol is naked before God and Abaddon has no clothes. | 6The underworld is naked in God’s presence. The place of destruction is uncovered. |
He spreads out the north over empty space, suspending the earth over nothing. | 7God stretches the northern sky over empty space and hangs the earth on nothing. |
"He restricts the waters within clouds and the clouds don't burst open under them. | 8He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. |
He has enclosed the face of the full moon and spread his clouds over it. | 9He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. |
He has delimited a boundary over the surface of the oceans as a limit between light and darkness. | 10He created the horizon when he separated the waters; he set the boundary between day and night. |
The pillars of the heavens tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. | 11The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. |
By his power he disturbs the sea; and with his skill he shatters the sea monster. | 12By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. |
he clears the skies with his wind; his hands have pierced the fleeing serpent. | 13His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. |
Indeed, these are the fringes of his ways, and how faint is the whisper we've heard of it! But who can comprehend the thunder of his might?" | 14These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power. Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?” |
