Why doesn't the Almighty reserve time for judgment? and why don't those who know him perceive his days? | 1“Why doesn’t the Almighty bring the wicked to judgment? Why must the godly wait for him in vain? |
They move boundary stones, steal flocks, and pasture them. | 2Evil people steal land by moving the boundary markers. They steal livestock and put them in their own pastures. |
They drive away the orphan's donkey; they take the ox of the widow as security for a loan; | 3They take the orphan’s donkey and demand the widow’s ox as security for a loan. |
They push the needy off the road, and force the poor of the land into hiding. | 4The poor are pushed off the path; the needy must hide together for safety. |
"Look! Like wild donkeys in the wilderness, they work diligently as they seek wild game in the desert, food for them and their young ones. | 5Like wild donkeys in the wilderness, the poor must spend all their time looking for food, searching even in the desert for food for their children. |
They reap fodder in the field and glean in the vineyard of the wicked. | 6They harvest a field they do not own, and they glean in the vineyards of the wicked. |
They spend the night naked, without clothing, with no covering against the cold. | 7All night they lie naked in the cold, without clothing or covering. |
They are wet from mountain rains; without shelter, they cling to a rock. | 8They are soaked by mountain showers, and they huddle against the rocks for want of a home. |
"The fatherless are torn from the breast; the poor are taken away as security for a loan. | 9“The wicked snatch a widow’s child from her breast, taking the baby as security for a loan. |
They wander around naked, without clothes; hungry, though they carry sheaves of grain. | 10The poor must go about naked, without any clothing. They harvest food for others while they themselves are starving. |
They press oil between the olive groves owned by the wicked; they suffer from thirst, even while treading the winepress. | 11They press out olive oil without being allowed to taste it, and they tread in the winepress as they suffer from thirst. |
From the city, dying men groan aloud, and the wounded cries out for help, but God charges no one with wrong. | 12The groans of the dying rise from the city, and the wounded cry for help, yet God ignores their moaning. |
"Then there are those who rebel against the light; they are not acquainted with its ways; and they don't stay on its course. | 13“Wicked people rebel against the light. They refuse to acknowledge its ways or stay in its paths. |
The murderer rises at dawn to kill the poor and needy; at night, he is like a thief. | 14The murderer rises in the early dawn to kill the poor and needy; at night he is a thief. |
The adulterer watches for twilight, saying, 'No eye is watching me' while he veils his face. | 15The adulterer waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No one will see me then.’ He hides his face so no one will know him. |
They break into houses in the dark; during the day they remained sealed in. They don't know daylight. | 16Thieves break into houses at night and sleep in the daytime. They are not acquainted with the light. |
As a group, deep darkness is their morning time; fear that lives in darkness is their friend." | 17The black night is their morning. They ally themselves with the terrors of the darkness. |
"They remain only a short time on the water's surface; their inheritance will be cursed in the land; no one will work in their vineyards. | 18“But they disappear like foam down a river. Everything they own is cursed, and they are afraid to enter their own vineyards. |
As drought and heat evaporate melting snow, that's what Sheol does with sinners. | 19The grave consumes sinners just as drought and heat consume snow. |
The womb will forget them. Maggots will find them to be a delicacy! They won't be remembered anymore, their iniquity will be cut to pieces like firewood. | 20Their own mothers will forget them. Maggots will find them sweet to eat. No one will remember them. Wicked people are broken like a tree in the storm. |
"They prey on the barren woman, and do no favors for widows. | 21They cheat the woman who has no son to help her. They refuse to help the needy widow. |
God prolongs the life of the strong by his power, but they get up in the morning without purpose in life. | 22“God, in his power, drags away the rich. They may rise high, but they have no assurance of life. |
He gives them security and financial support, but he watches everything they do. | 23They may be allowed to live in security, but God is always watching them. |
They're exalted momentarily, but then they are gone; they are humbled, just like all the others. They are cut down like heads of corn. | 24And though they are great now, in a moment they will be gone like all others, cut off like heads of grain. |
If this weren't so, who can prove that I'm a liar by showing that there's nothing to what I'm saying?" | 25Can anyone claim otherwise? Who can prove me wrong?” |
